Replacing cat... Remove resonator?

Replacing cat... Remove resonator?

Post by redzmonte »

So I ordered a new cat for my 3" downpipe, the small one in there isn't getting the job done.. Question now is do I remove the resonator? I know the gp resonators are a little restrictive, don't recall how good the Bonnie one is.. Who has removed it and how does it sound with stock mufflers? I have some straight 2.5" stainless in the garage and been looking for an excuse to use it...

Btw the cat I ordered is a magnaflow 99209HM round cat.. 3" in/out

It'll sound bad. It'll sound less bad with a glasspack in place of the rez though. Or even a midmuffler.

Bonne Res isn't restrictive, just up to you how you want to change the sound...

YEA 3800s unless cammed, sound like dog shyt without the resonator. also like they said the bonnie rez arent so restrictive.. mostly to dampen the pressure/pulse of the exhaust. also eliminating the 3800 rasp/pop. the only other way to remove it and still have a deep throaty exhaust that flows good would be to replace the resonator with an expansion chamber or some sort of gutted muffler and or gut the oem rez.

I do alot of custom/performance exhaust systems on peoples "race cars" i currently run 2 3/4in from down pipe to resonator. (btw ive moved the rez forward over 12in.
then from the rez theres a 2 3/4" to 3" adapter around 3in long going to a flowmaster super 44 then my own hand made 1 into 2 y pipe from single 3 1/2" to dual 2 1/2" then to 4" chrome tips a foot before the rear bumper.

ive yet to hear it with my new sc3800 though.. thinking ill boost creep a bit on stock tune....

im also contemplating a electric cut out about where cat once was that re routes back into the system after the muffler and resonator for performance purposes yet still come out my dual tips

I've heard a fair amount of Grand Prix's around here without a resonator. It is quite obvious and does not come close to sounding good IMHO.

Just curious, but from the few FWD Bonnevilles I've heard, the 92 - 99 sound better than most of the 2000 - 2005 Bonneville's I've heard. The 92 - 99 don't have a resonator. So I guess my question is, what is it about the 2000 - 2005 exhaust system that makes them need a resonator to sound better, or does it? - BC

The 92-93 don't have resonators, they added them in 94. The 00+ has a different routing that changes how the sound is heard at the back of the car. Much like how the 04+ GP and 06+ Lucerne sound different from any of the others, because of the way the exhaust is set up. (Personally I like the stock tone of the newer ones better but that's my opinion.)

The new gens(L26/L32) sound pretty meaty stock. I dig it.

IMO, my GP SE L26 with single exhaust sounded wayyyy better than my brother's GT L26, something about the GP GT exhaust just doesn't sound right...

It sounds better with the L32 Chris. My friend has a L32 07 GT. The Lucerne single exhaust sounds good too. Carl noticed that when I took him downtown in my gram's a while back.

I'm yet to hear an L32, but L26 to L26, my single exhaust was better lol.
