Passed smog, still on original cat!!

Post by grey3800 »

Rebuilt Motor 3 years ago (collapsed lifter); O2, plugs not touched. Original Catalytic Converter!

I think credit goes to the Seafoam treatment done 2 days prior, with ~100miles driven afterwords.

15MPH
HC - Measured: 6; Max Allowed: 58;
CO - Measured: 0.05; Max Allowed: 0.33;
NO - Measured: 60; Max Allowed: 481;

25MPH
HC - Measured: 6; Max Allowed: 33;
CO - Measured: 0.07; Max Allowed: 0.31;
NO - Measured: 78; Max Allowed: 491;

Numbers from two years ago:

15MPH
HC - Measured: 52; Max Allowed: 58;
CO - Measured: 0.14; Max Allowed: 0.33;
NO - Measured: 118; Max Allowed: 481;

25MPH
HC - Measured: 29; Max Allowed: 33;
CO - Measured: 0.06; Max Allowed: 0.31;
NO - Measured: 64; Max Allowed: 491;

I'm just happy I didn't have to go through the headache of getting a new cat :banana: :banana: . Last years numbers were indicitive I might have to. Seafoam was a $10 gamble. After reading advice here on the site and on the net, I agreed that it would be best to just take a smog test and let the numbers tell you what equipment needed attention.

Pontiac ftw!

Cool to hear it... sooner or later if you keep it you will need a new converter... But if you have emissions and have to replace it, get a HM( Heavy Metals ) Converter...

As well all 3800's have been very emissions friendly, and have become better over the years...

By the time we hit 94 the emissions from the L27 were extremely low as in next to none..

The 95 L36 put out .0002 grams per mile once the cat was hot.. The 3800 line of engines was always very clean emissions wise.. Never understood why GM never touted that.. The really had a very clean V6's that didn't require 4 cats to do the job...

IIRC all of the 94-05 Bonnevilles all should have been California Compliant as well.. I know my 03's emissions label says California Compliant and says Meets NLEV standards for 2003 Model Year ...

I just think they had done a really good job making these engines clean... There were a lot of engines for the time that could not do what these engines did..

You know, that's just another thing that amazes me with the 3800's. Good on emissions, great gas mileage, very good power (for the day), and solid as a tank. GM did everything right with these engines, and I still to this day find it a complete shame that they decided to end its production.

So do I.... But they say more power.... Better MPG's and cleaner emissions...

I always thought cars were supposed to get lighter in the name of weight savings... But it seems they are getting heavier..

I was driving my( 95 ) Bonneville to Daytona and back.. Roughly 45 minutes each way... I was rolling at roughly 80Mph and doing 30+ Mpg... Could not imagine if the car had a .650 or .605 5th gear( Double Overdrive )...

Yep, gotta give props to GM for making a great, long lasting product. I don't know many manufactuers that could say that their cats and emissions equipment still function to spec after 20 years!

My cat is shot to pieces, but it still passes the emissions test. The emissions test is more lenient for pre '93 cars over here though.
