trunk leak issues

Post by swampthing »

so I think I have finally found my trunk leak. it has been non stop raining here for the past 3 days. I decided to take a flashlight and look in the trunk through the back seat I couldn't see anything so I decided to open the trunk and when I did water poured out of the trunk lid on the passenger side corner behind the center reflector.

when the rain stops I plan to remove the carpet and look for the source. any ideas what it could be in the trunk lid?

If those clips that hold the center reflector on the trunklid are not tight, they allow plenty of water inside the trunklid. It just sits there and waits for you to open the lid, and then it pours out, all over inside your trunk. I just went through the same ordeal. Replaced the clips, the leak is gone.

that will be the first thing I check then. funny thing is the trunk fills up with water without me ever opening it. I wonder if I have two separate leaks :angry7:

btw got a p/n for those clips?

Ya you probably have 2 issues.

Those clips are extremely expensive new: http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... 3&start=60

I have some here if you are interested in some good uses ones.

It is not really a fix, but if you open the trunk. Look at the bottom edge of the lid, about a 8 inches in from the outside and just outside the area that seals against the body. You should see two rubber plugs, remove them and the water drains with the lid closed. That was happening to my wife's car (it would leak when the trunk was open and closed) and one day at the store (right after it dumped a gallon of water in the trunk) i felt one of them. I removed both and haven't had a problem since. That includes a day when it rained a foot and a half of water within an hour for 4 hours!! Again, not a fix but it helps and it's free.

In the photo below, the red line is where the trunk actually seals. So pull the plugs and water will drain.

My center tail light lens is also full of water on my 2000 Bonneville. I'm trying to remove it but after removing the trunk lid liner and removing the four nuts it is very tight near the top. How do you get the lens to pop off the top clips

With a flat blade screwdriver. They will break, not really any way around it.

I drilled small holes on both sides of the reflector at the bottom. All the water drained right away and I haven't had any problems since.
