Jiffy lube
Brought the car in for an oil change because I didn't feel like doing it myself ended up getting the transmission fluid changed it was disgusting and black, got the air cabin filter swapped looked like it was a raccoons nest, coolant flushed at 100000 miles finally got the dex out of there, tires rotated and belt to the alternator replaced ended up coming home and waxing her down
I love my Bonneville too much.
Put on my Pontiac Bonneville club. Com decals

Tranny fluid change made a huge difference shifts flawlessly

Re: Jiffy lube
Sweet, glad it's fixed. Just have to be careful with them sometimes, I've been to some JL's that try to screw people over with add-on replacements they don't need.
Best story I recall is of one that tried to sell some lady a distributor cap, on a car with DIS (DistributorLESS Ignition System).

Was all of the fluid replaced?
Did you notice shifting problems before fluid change?
About 22K behind you. Previous owner lived in Cincy, so may be hard miles.

Re: Jiffy lube
They did actually flush the coolant system out completely or just drain the radiator? How much did they charge for the coolant flush? I need to get mine done...my dexcool isn't looking too hot..

Re: Jiffy lube
If you want to do it yourself, its real easy. Just drop the lower coolant hose, and fill the radiator back up with water and Prestone Coolant FLUSH. Run the car for a half hour. Let it cool, and drain the water/coolant mixture out of the lower hose again. Fill the radiator back up with water and more Flush if you want, and run for another half hour. Let it cool, and drain once again. This time, fill up with coolant/water mixture. Best bet is to get a 50/50 bottle and one straight coolant. Since there is a lot more water in the system, you probably want to put a 1/4 to 1/2 of the straight coolant in to the radiator first. Then fill it up the rest with the 50/50. It probably wouldn't hurt to get a new Thermostat, as that is probably gunky. If you get a new thermostat in, just remember to purge out the air.gkaiser124 wrote:They did actually flush the coolant system out completely or just drain the radiator? Re: Jiffy lube
My biggest issue with Jiffy Lube and similar places are the quality of filters they use. They're generally similar to Fram, and by that I mean cheap junk. If I didn't have time to do it myself, I'd take them my oil and filter, and just pay them for labor. Just my $.02.

My biggest issue is that they're the "fast food" business of car maintenance...
They're the McDonald's of getting your oil changed. This is why I am working on starting my own lube place. Run by a car guy... Not someone looking to get you in and out in 15 minutes.

I completely agree about JL being the "fast food joint" of the car world. Sadly there are more cases than not of new people over on teh LH forums that take their car in and JL ends up stripping out our aluminum pans by overtorquing the drain plug. I've seen enough to know that Im not really a fan

O/P, did you refill with Dexcool?
Because it's 5 years/100,000 miles, which ever comes first.
A 2001 should be well into its second coolant flush from new, regardless of miles.

Nothing wrong with Dexcool.Franksdad wrote:No I didn't refill with dex I thought it was bad
As a GM Tech, I can say we just don't see problems directly related to Dexcool.
I even converted older cars of my own over to Dexcool.
Do what you feel is best though, it's your choice.

Never have I ever heard a single good thing about dex-cool. It eats away at gaskets and will build up and clog any crevice in the engine with sludge.1tinindian wrote:Nothing wrong with Dexcool.Franksdad wrote:No I didn't refill with dex I thought it was bad

Gaskets with under 140,000 miles on an iron block engine should not look like this:

2009 Chevy Silverado 2500HD crew cab, 6.0, Z71. The project mover.
2002 Regal GS: 3.4 pulley, E85, and quicker than my old 99
1982 Pontiac Grand Prix L67, T56, GT45, T56, Holley EFI; It's pretty quick Mod list here

Re: Jiffy lube
It does that because NOBODY changes it. Provided you flush it regularly (in anything that's been upgraded to aluminum LIM gaskets) it's fine. And really the only reason it eats the plastic gaskets is because when Dex is exposed to oxygen for long periods of time (years) it turns slightly acidic, acid eats plastic, LIMs leak with no gaskets. Dex isn't the real source of issue, it's lack of PM.

Re: Jiffy lube
I have seen dex take out LIM gaskets before they were even close to 100k. Personally i had to go through the LIM at about 105-110 but i think it never got changed. So its mostlikey my fault. Countless buddies who have gone through a few sets of manifold gaskets before they were even to 150k. Yeah im sure if you had it changed regularly like your supposed to it probably would be fine... but why take the risk?
After my motor swap last week i had some different kind put in. I cant remember but it some kind that dodge uses i guess.

Re: Jiffy lube
bs009: Those gaskets look oddly similar to the gaskets I had taken out of my car. Granted, the previous owner probably never knew to change the coolant over the years but it wasn't even 100,000 miles before my gaskets turned to crap. When my heater core popped, I cracked open the end and found a bunch of things that probably shouldn't be in your system. Now I have the green stuff, and I have to change it every other year to help get the gunk out. I gotta pour in a bottle of system flush and run it for a few days, drain the system, add water and more flush, run it for a couple hours, then empty and refill with 60/40 coolant. I don't look forward to this every 2 years.
