Change accessory serpentine belt on Supercharged engine L67

Post by blye »

I was following the great write-up about changing the accessory belt but that was for the non-supercharged engine.
There is one tricky piece of the puzzle when working with the supercharged engine, which I learned the hard way.
So I'm just posting this for reference to others (and myself when I have to do this again and have forgotten.)

The supercharger belt is easy enough to remove (once the engine mount spacer is removed). But the accessory belt is much harder, since there is an extra idler pulley in the way on the s/c engine.
The pulley, for the supercharger belt, sticks out from the engine right where the engine mount is. On my engine there is about a 3mm clearance between the pulley and the mount. You must squeeze the belt between the pulley and motor mount to get it out (and to get the new one on). To make matters worse, I think when the spacer is removed the gap closes to about 2mm. What I had to do was to pry the engine mount away from the engine to make the gap about 2mm larger. I did this down where the spacer was, using a lever against the engine and the mount, from the bottom of the car. Then my helper was just able to jam the belt through the gap. Perhaps there is some kind of puller that would work better than a lever.

I just replaced both belts on a 99 Buick Park Avenue L67 & it was an ordeal to change! I used a floor jack with a piece of wood to lift up & hold the engine while the motor mount bolts an spacers were removed to snake the belts into position thru the motor mounts! I also changed the water pump and the lower idler pulley for the super charger belt. They will only go back together in the proper sequence!
