YAW sensor

Would someone be able to explain which black box in the trunk is the yaw sensor and what I need to pull to kill it? This drive back from Chicago is the straw that broke the camel's back as far as this stability system goes. And I really don't want to stick any more money in this car at the time!

Not sure which wire it is without looking into it, but why do you feel it needs to be "killed"?
If it's just a message on the DIC, I'd live with it, if it's not affecting how the car runs and drives.

The yaw sensor is under the rear seat on the drivers side.

Ya, it is to the point it is killing driveablility on the highway. It is constantly trying to correct itself and is going to put me in the ditch one of these days. My boyfriend fought with the system for 70 miles last night! From my research on here I am pretty sure its the steering wheel position sensor, given I have already replaced pretty much every physical part that would have to do with the ride (tires, bearings, tie rods, an entire axle, the list goes on...). But I've spent $1200 on it in the last few months, and woke up to a windshield crack from the snow, so that is next on my list unfortunately. So i will have to go with disabling it for the time being.

The yaw sensor is under the rear seat on the drivers side.

Isnt the Yaw sensor behind the drivers side speaker in the trunk? (thats where it is in my 2000)

cant you just push the "traction control off" button to override the system anyway?

The "trac off" button does not actually shut off the system unfortunately, it just makes it slightly less sensitive. Thanks for the pic though, that is extremely helpful as I have to try and work around a 150 lb subwoofer enclosure wedged in the trunk I will try that this evening!

First it sounds like you are shotgunning parts on the car with this Stability Issue.....have you scanned to determine if that is your problem???

the yaw sensor is not in the trunk, its in underneath the rear seat on the drivers side. It will be the only sensor with wires running to it.

I dont understand how the Stability System is causing drivability issues. If the system has a fault, it will completely disable the system......meaning it does not do any of vehicle correction

I was just going to say, it won't do anything if something isn't working. The system in the Bonneville's isn't that advanced compared to other GM vehicles. It's just there to stop you from pushing the vehicle past it's limits, not to actually correct/enforce body motion.

If you're done, how much do you want to sell it for? I'll let you enjoy one last drive back to Chicago in it I don't want to drive up there. Crossing "the curtain" causes immediate brain cell damage and loss of IQ points. :p

What I think she meant by the vehicle trying to correct itself is the EBCM trying to apply brakes to each side intermittently.

Essentially, the Stabilitrak is activated by the electronic brake control module (EBCM) which calculates a desired yaw rate then compares it to the actual yaw rate input from your driving. The ECBM determines this desired yaw rate from measured steering wheel position, vehicle speed, and lateral acceleration. The difference between this desired yaw rate and actual yaw rate is teh yaw rate error, and is measured by oversteer or understeer. If thta yaw rate error becomes too large, the EBCM will attempt to correct the vehicle's yaw motion by applying differential braking to the left or right front wheel.

Most of the parts where not replaced because of the stability system, but because they were in need of replacing. All of which though should have resulted in a smoother more even ride, since the system itself is quite touchy. Every time the car is started, the stability sytem tries to work its "magic" again, intermittenly applying the brakes while I'm driving to correct whatever it is sensing as being an issue. This systems 'corrections' are actually making the drive challenging, and I'm guessing dangerous and it jerks me around on the road and tries to keep me from accelarating about whatever it seems to think is a "safe speed". It will do this for a little while, and then eventually give up and throw the service stabillity system warning. Then it drives fine. I did have it scanned at a shop, cost me $79, and they claimed that it turned up nothing other than my tires being a little over inflated.

Haha! I will let you know when I do formally 'give up' on it. This car has been a never ending battle of repairs and I keep forking over the cash because I just really really like the stupid thing. I'm about to order some nice custom license plates...something along the lines of MONEYPIT. lol

Sounds like you have a problem with your EBCM. That shop screwed you over, you need to find someone that can ready actual codes.

You're 6 hours from me. If you make it here, I promise your car will be fixed for a very reasonable price.

I really really wish I did have someone from around here who knew their way around this car! For now I will disable it, I'm $11,000 into this beast. I will be in the cities in a couple weeks, not sure where Browerville is though. Sad given I lived in MN for 10 years.

So I will look book inside the trunk and under the passenger seat for a box like pictured above and post my results lol.

To fix all your problems... Remove the packer license plate frame and replace it with a Bears frame. Your stability control system will thank you and all will be back to normal...

Ha, not sure what I did there... under the rear seat i mean. I had originally thought it was in the trunk so my brain went back to that. duh!
