removing VHT nightshades

Post by G1eitz »

Once you spray your tails with VHT can it ever be removed and still look similar to what it was stock?

Requires wet-sanding and polishing.

Otherwise you can buy tinted film and apply it, and that will just peel off.

I also have considered that, Does the tint look okay? I am looking to do something like another member on here, not sure of his name but he has a white bonneville with cleared tails and just the lower halves of tails and the whole center done. I just am not sure whether the tint would hold up where it stops under the reverse light and blinker.

I think it depends on whether or not you go through the correct process of painting them or not.
if you do all the prep work to make sure the coats of VHT really stay on well (ie: cleaning and wetsanding the taillights before you apply any coats) or just simply wiping them down and spraying the VHT.
it may also depend on whether or not you go the suggested route of clear coating the light assemblies after they have been sprayed with the VHT (some people like the matte/ semi-gloss look I guess).

I have had friends who were able to get theirs off using some paint thinner (or quite simply gasoline) and spend decent time scrubbing it off the lights. they however didnt prep the taillights completely and chose to not clear coat them.

if the tint is something that you may eventually want to be able to take off, for either personal or law enforced reasons, it would probably be easier to go with a vinyl tint.
RVinyl makes a precut tint for the whole rear (http://bit.ly/124XFYu), or you could buy the bulk film and do it all yourself. that way you could go for the same look as Booze's car, which I am also a huge fan of.

x2 on what's been said so far. VHT can be removed but you'll have to work at it. So if you were looking to be able to remove it the film would be much easier.

You could definitely pull off the same effect as my tails with a tint film. Only other thing I can think of that wasn't mentioned was that with a film you're limited on your choice of how dark the film is, with VHT you can spray as light or dark as you like.

Will, do you have any pictures of it? I see the have a few options... light, dark, and black I don't want it too light but i don't really want to black it out either.

A company called Lamin-X. I ordered direct from them. Good product, especially for a DIY.
