Foogy looking tail lights water in tail lights 01 SE

Post by walnut777 »

I searched and maybe I am using the wrong terms when I am searching. When I say "foggy" looking tail lights. It is apparent that the outer plastic lens is coming unglued or something. There is water inside of it and when you lift the trunk lid all the way up the water will run out from the tail lights or whatever you call the red lens running across the trunk lid. This same fogginess that makes me think the lens is coming unglued is also happening on the tail lights on the car. I see it on alot of the Bonnevilles I see around town. I didnt see any reference to this in the common problems post either. Thanks in advance.

I have this. The trunk usually opens automatically . . . . unless the entire rear taillight-reflector assembly is full of water. I'm sure that with some kind of automotive goo/caulk/adhesive, one can repair it and seal it all up, but I'm not sure of the BEST solution.

Mine pours out INTO the trunk when I lift it . . . . yay!

You can take a small drill and make a drain hole in the black plastic part in the very bottom inside corner where
it can't be seen or won't be obvious. This lets the water out, but won't fix the haze.

Sadly the only way to fix the haze is replacement. The inside of the lights slowly delaminates.

This reflector can be removed by removing the nuts holding it to the trunk lid and then releasing the 2 clips that nold the top of that reflector to the trunk lid. Then cut it open on top and sides with a dremel clean it up and reseal and re-attach. In addition, to mine I installed a row of led lights running along the top pointing the led's down & hooked them up to my tail lights. Very nice looking tail lights across the back of trunk lid now. A bit of work but worth it.

Can you post or send a picture of the taillights/LED lit?
I would love to see what it looks like in the dark. I always thought the center should have had lights too.

There is good section devoted to lighting up the red centre tail reflector in June 2012 under '00+ centre tail light mod'. I have detailed the project as I completed it and night time pictures of the tail light with and w/o flash. Import to remember is if you want to use the red reflector than you use red LED's not white. You use the same colour of LED as the colour of light you are wanting to create. White LED will light it up but won't give you that distinctive bright LED look. If you have trouble finding this topic just PM me and I can email pics to you directly.
