Buying an SSEi - Best Years & Things To Check

Post by 89OldsRocket »

Looking to buy an SSEi and wanted to know what areas of the body/undercarriage are common areas for rust? Do all of them have sunroofs? Looks wise which years have the most aggresive looking stock bodykits? Are the 92 3.8L the same as the 89-91 engines?

I've never owned a 92-99 so I'm unfamiliar with them.

As far as the body styling goes, 92-95 and 96-99 are the same, respectively.

It all depends on what you want. Most have sunroofs, AL7 seats, etc. Some have cloth and no sunroof, but those are exceedingly rare.

Rust is getting more and more common, check the rockers, wheel wells and where the front subframe meets the body.

95 has the best engine of the S1, 96 is the carryover year of the Series II L67 but 4T60E-HD trans, and 97+ has the 4T65E-HD trans. IF you plan on modding, a 98-99 is probably your best bet, as they have the most advanced PCM (Read: Easier to tune), likely easier to find with lower miles and the S2 engine.

I was under the impression GM "sped up" the computers in the 99's and later? So you're saying the 98-99 are exactly the same as far as drivetrain/ECM wise?
