1997 Grand Prix GTP Shutter - exhaust issue??

Talk about the other 3800 powered GM cars, particularly for items not covered in other sections that may be unique to your year/model, and differ from a Bonneville.

It was the spark plugs. Platinum. Only 2 days old and they were already cracked and burnt up. Switch to iridium. Runs like a champ. Like they told me.. don't use platinum in s/c motors ;)

It isn't that platinums can't take the heat like what was stated earlier. Platinum plugs do not like to have reverse current run through them like how the DIS systems on our cars do.

That's why with our cars (or anything that has 1 coil per two cylinders for that matter) you use either copper or iridium.
2005 GXP - White Gold Pearl, no mods...yet.
2000 SSEi - Resurrection in progress. Built L67 w/L32 fuel rail, ported heads, and cam. Camaro front brake system, GXP cluster, and much more in planning.

I thought it was the heat. On other forums people do not run plat in boosted applications because of the heat. And I thought I that there were members running platinum in NA applications.

I have used the Delco 41-101 spark plugs with no issues in my 93 L67. That was in a pure stock form of a series one engine, so I know it is not an apples to apples comparison. Since adding the listed mods in my sig, I have been using the NGK TR55 plugs.

When you call or go to the parts stores, they call the 101s platinum, but I am almost certain that the 101s are the iridium version of the 41-940 (which IS platinum). Any idea what brand/part number they gave you?

Only thing I remember (I took them back) is they were AC Delco 'Premium Platinum Pre-Gapped' Spark Plugs. And they were definitely platinum cuz their 'look/color' compared to the OEM were extremely different. All I know is they had cracked and it was already misfiring (which is why i put new plugs in, in the first place) after only 2 days of being in there.

If it makes a difference, It's a Series 2 and I have a weapon r secret weapon intake with ram air. So it is a 'little' step further than stock. 8-[

The oem IS ac delco. That doesn't mean that the plugs you pulled out to start with were delcos.

How and where did it crack again, i missed that?

I am not that certain about your air intake, but if it takes in engine bay air (warmer than outside temp), that intake is a power loss, not gain over the stock air box. a K&N drop in would be better performance wise than most of those "cold air intakes". Either way, one thing I do know, is that the ram air effect is NOT an actual useful "ram air". Iirc, you need to be above 120 mph before an air scoop can be considered any sort of forced induction kind of ram air in the sense you are thinking of.

The factory were AC delco. Said it right on em. And the white part cracked. And the 'ram air' (as they call it) goes into the fender. So its actually sucking in cold air. But that's not the question I asked ;) either way. Wouldn't recommend platinum in supercharged (learned the hard way) :)

If the white part was cracked, that is typically an installation breakage. Not the fault of the plug fwiw. I am sure you are going to tell me next you are 100% certain you did not do it during install, but w/e. Not using platinum is better anyways.

Cold air is good. When I posted that, I did a quick google search for what you said you had. I found the brand, but not ones labeled "ram air", so just wanted to make sure it wasn't the hot air intakes that came up in my brief search.

No prob. I lucked out when I bought it and they were including the 'ram air' tube at the time. And I checked all the plugs before I put the wires on and they weren't cracked. So I'm thinking the heat on those plugs did it. Either way they looked like 'shizz' already after two days. So yep. No more platinum for me :)
