Anyone else have problems with their gas cap?

Post by keir »

Mine is becoming harder and harder to take off and on with each gas station stop.It is so hard to remove that I usually end up scraping and cutting the skin on my thumb knuckle as I try to turn the cap....

Is there a bunch of rust around the filler tube? That's probably what is holding it on.

No there is no rust in the area.Im thinking the mechanism in the cap must be bad and I might look into a replacement cap from an auto parts store.

Its not the cap, its the filler tube. I've seen this on many of my projects. I've tried multiple caps, even ones that work perfect in other cars. The filler tube plastic must expand over time or something. Replace the filler tube.

Jack up the rear, remove the wheel, remove the plastic shield, remove the 10mm ground strap, loosen the hose clamp, pry the rubber hose away from the plastic filler tube, and pull the whole filler tube assembly out the fuel tank door. It will take some muscle to wrangle it out of there.

I have a good filler tube here if you need one.

That does not sound too hard for me to take on....just get me a quote on the tube and a pair of hood lift/supports,if you have any,and we can go from there.
