My trip up to Mackinac Island (added some more photo's)

Post by Bing »

My wife and I left our home at about 4:00am this past Sunday. I love driving in the early morning hours, its like you have the road all to yourself.
We were able to enjoy time away from the kids and just enjoy time being together alone.

Here's some shots along the way going up US 131.

Heres a shot I love, stopped just before going over the Mackinac Bridge.

These are a couple my wife snapped as we crossed.
Image

Image

These are some of the West bluff summer cottages over looking the bridge on Mackinac Island.
Image

Image

This is a view that those cottages get to enjoy every sunset.

Image

This is main street at 6:00am. the lack of people is almost crazy with how busy it gets in just a few hours.
Image
Same view only at night, just a few people hitting the bars.
Image

This is how they get refrigerated/frozen food to the island.
Image
Heres Fort Mackinac:
Image
This happened the first night, pretty cool sight.
Image

This is the Cloghaan B&B that we stayed at for 3 nights on the island.
Image

I brought along both of our bikes and I was able to check out quite a few of the MTB trails throughout the island. I ended up riding about 93 miles in the past 3 days. My wife prefers to run and did plenty of that on this trip. To much food and sweets were consumed on this vacation, but whats a vacation without some indulgences :) . Would've had more pictures but we've been there and seen that. It's a trip we try to make every year, just to relax and enjoy doing whatever we want whenever.

The Bonne made the trip without a hitch, of coarse. It averaged 27mpg for the trip up to the bridge and back, a little more windy on the way back, and some sudden accelerations to pass people. :bpylons:

I've been up there a few times, by sweets did you mean their fudge they have? Such a nice place up there, lots of scenery

Great photos, thanks for sharing!

I like the misty shots... you could almost imagine the Hound of the Baskervilles lurking in the mist.

I've never really liked fudge, so by sweets I meant caramel popcorn, and long island iced teas, just not together. :P

It really is a nice place to get away and relax, as long as you get away from the crazies on main street. There is plenty of island to be able to get away from the crowds, even though the island is only 8.5 mi. around. :btruestory:

Island life sort of appeals to me.

My parents live on the Isle of Wight, which is a lot bigger It's about 25 x 12 miles IIRC, and its very beautiful in parts. It would be a pain having to get to the mainland for motoring events etc though - expensive and time-consuming.

Those first couple of morning shots with the fog are bewilderingly beautiful. I'd love to drive through something like that.

It was a beautiful morning then, I believe it was about 5:45am. when the pictures were taken. I think I remember intake air temps around 62* or so. The first cool morning that we had in a while was probably a big contributor to the fog. Glad you guys enjoyed the shots, I miss the cooler weather already. :sadeyz:

Great shots and glad you had a great time on the trip. It is such a beautiful area - definitely a must-see for anyone who loves road trips & sight-seeing. I've been there twice, and would go back again and again, it's just such a great area. One thing I thought of, is....you wonder how many people have photographed their vehicles in that same spot? I took this shot with my car parked down here, as there was a mint C6 Corvette in the same exact spot as your Bonnie, lol!

Image

I had to be in a wedding a year ago this past June, which was in southern MI, just north of Toledo. Drove down via the Chicago route on Wed/Thurs, and on the way back, completed the loop around Lake Michigan through Mackinac back to northern MN on Sat/Sun. Stopped in Detroit to spend a bit of time touring the River Rouge plant and Henry Ford Museum, then continued north. One treat is driving right along the sand dunes/lakeshore just feet off the highway as the road follows the lake for the next couple hours north of Mackinac. It was a picture perfect 75 degree day, as I got to enjoy the sunset on the lake as I made my way home. An awesome trip that I want to take my wife on in the near future - a place that everyone should put on their bucket list!

It's just one of those things you have to experience yourself to fully understand and enjoy. :btruestory:

P.S. Nice shot of the Stang, and you probably have a point about how many cars have used that as a beautiful back drop.

Those are such great pictures, and thanks for posting them - gave me a nice distraction from work for a few minutes. The island looks like a beautiful place!!

I haven't been on vacation in over 12 years, and from looking at this pictures, I think I might know where my next vacation spot will be!

Nice pics! I've never been there even living in MI for 15 years. But a bunch of my friends went up this year and had a blast so I might try and get some people together and go next year.
