You do not have a resistor unless you have ECC. Have you tried looking at your HVAC unit...sometimes the knobs won't work and you have to replace the unit

well shortly after posting this i located the resistor. it looks alll rusted up and weather worn so i got a new on on order from orilyes. I know its either that or the blower motor went out cause i lost 2 of my fan speeds and the motor was squeaking. here is what iam currently looking at. 1st pic is the resistor and the second is the slot it was in under the main fuse panel.

Sounds like your blower motor is going out if it is making noises.

Be thankful you do not have ECC. It is a nice feature but one the resistor goes it is a pretty costly fix.

Absolutely wrong. WITHOUT ECC you have a resistor. WITH ECC you have a solid state controller in it's place (same location).

Also absolutely wrong. I buy my blower control modules for about $5 apiece at the wrecker. Last time I went I got 5 for 20 bucks so I'd never have to go back. All 3 of my cars use them.

BLAH so i replaced the resistor and motor and i got 3 out of the 4 fan speeds back. i just dont have the highest level and in order to get to the third speed i have to push the knob inwards and turn for it to work. do i have to look into a new knob cluster or is it a relay problem?

Probably your dash unit is bad.

Everytime i go to the wrecker they are out or completely rusted. So i have no other choice but to buy new.

Don't forget the Buick Lesabre and Olds 88. They share the same blower control module. You'll want to make sure of the year.

PLAGUE PHANTOM, my issues revolve primarily around misinformation in this topic. Your two comments were both either wrong or way off base. Had both tidbits related to this issue, and the OP listened, he might still be struggling with his car.

Every GM H body from 92-99 uses the same ones, add the Buick Park Ave to the list above. And the Olds 98. The other cars that have them far out number the Bonnevilles that do. IIRC, you can go back to 1990 as well. These are very easy to find if you know what cars to dig into.

razmatazz wrote:what does a blower motor relay do.
The relay switches power to the blower motor directly from a 30 amp fuse in the relay center to the blower motor without the extra wiring through the switch and resistors. If you are getting HIGH speed at any time by wiggling the inside control to make contact on the low power circuit to engage the relay, your problem is in the dash control somewhere. However it is possible the relay in the relay center is burned and is only making contact at times. Try holding a finger on the relay while someone turns the dash control on and off of HIGH setting; you'll feel the relay move. If it moves and there's no high speed fan, then the contact may be corroded in the relay. I had that happen with the compressor relay on a 93. BTW, you may have other relays in the relay center with the same part number, single pole single throw. You could switch one of those in to see if it works before buying one.
