Is this worth it?

Post by Jordan »

Hey there. You guys ssure seem to know your Bonnevilles, so I though I would come here to see what you think.

I've been wanting to buy a 2000+ Bonneville for quite a while now, so I've been watching craigslist for one I could afford. Here's what it is:
2000 Bonneville SLE
150,000 miles
White.
Black leather interior, in very good shape.
Has hood herpes near the latch.
Large dent in rear driver side door, with a couple scratches behind it. Door still works.
No rust below gas door yet, but the gas door does have chipped paint.
Tires have no tread whatsoever left.
When I got in and started it up, the gas gauge read empty. He said sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but wasn't sure if that was how much was actually in it or not.
The guy told me that when it started it earlier that day the blower for the heater wasn't working, and sure enough it didn't. He said it wasn't like that before.
I walked around it while it ran, and noticed a headlight was out. He apparently didn't know that, either.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, there is a spiderweb crack on the passenger side of the windshield. The guy said he drove it like that for a while.
He was wanting $2200 for it, but said he could go down to $1900.

What do you guys think it's worth?

Somewhere around $1900 wouldn't be a bad price provided it runs good and the transmission shifts well. If you can haggle a couple hundred out of him, that would be even better.

More info on your problems: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=25362

I say go for it.

Generally when there is problems with a car and the owner claims to not "notice" them that would steer me away from a car.
1)you can generally find blower motors for a dime a dosen at a junkyard.
2)head lights are no big deal
3)to see if the gas gauge is bad or not i would say to get a gallon or two of gas and bring it there and put it in the car. better to spend 10 bucks on gas to see if it works or not than just guessing.
4)tires.. self explanitory
5)as far as the hood and door. it depends on how you feel about it. i live in minnesota so rust is common here haha
6)take it for a test drive. check the usual stuff.

even though u can beat him down to 1900. i would try 1750 or 1800. most people wont say know when the cash is right infront of them. I will say i do like the car though good find!

Thanks for the input, but I forgot to mention, there is a spiderweb crack on the passenger side of the windshield. The guy said he drove it like that for a while.
I would drive it for a while like that. I mean I would replace it if I get pulled over and get told to fix it, and I don't think it would cost too much to get a used one from the junkyard in. I've been driving my Grand Am with a crack all the way across since I bought it 7 months ago.

The windshield will have to be replaced by the pro's. It's not even worth your time to contemplate doing it yourself. I've used Safe-Lite and they were a good company to deal with. I would check them out and get a price figured out for what a replacement would cost. Then use that info as extra leverage in haggling the price down.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with the above for sure.
However, check into the windshield. There is a law here in IL anyway that makes it illegal to drive a car, let alone sell one with a cracked windshield. If this holds true in your state, you may be able to get him to throw that into the deal. :btruestory:

I'm from Wisconsin and never heard of such a thing here. Not saying we don't have it, but I've never heard of it in Wisconsin. There's people with busted/cracked windshields driving around everywhere.

The most I would pay is probably $1500 not a penny more. Who knows what other problems are also being hidden/covered up. He seems to "not know" very much.

Edit: Haro beat me to it.

I agree with having that though. Just keeps unsafe vehicles off the road (or at least tries to penalize them to get it fixed)

It looks like it will clean up well! All the problems mentioned aren't a big deal, but I wonder what else the owner "doesn't know about".
Try to haggle to $1500 like Andrew said.
