Need advice on selling a transmission ...

Post by dayton.reed »

When we were going to have our first son, and we were moving out of state, my parents gave us the old '96 Windstar 3.8 that was collecting pollen on the street. It's was Incredible to have for the couple years it was running well. Interior is awesome, it has all the luxury features, and it held half of our apartment with the seats out (it also carried over 100 pizzas for a couple big deliveries I had).
My parents had to have the engine rebuilt when they had it because of the head gasket issue, and they had already had the transmission rebuilt once. On a trip, the tranny busted on us, and we had it rebuilt again, thinking it should last us a while longer. Well about 3000ish miles later, it's got oil in the radiator and won't start. It's been sitting for over a year, and I'm going to scrap it.
The problem is, I'm only going to get about $100 more for it on account of the fresh tranny with paperwork. Is it possible and/or practical to sell the tranny for a few hundred on it's own and scrap the rest of the car? How would I go about doing this?

IMO I would always sell the parts indivually that people have a high demand for. Engine (even though it may be toasted), transmission, wheels & tires, etc. If the transmission was recently rebuild, it should sell no problem. I would put it on ebay and craigslist. Oh & always be patient when selling parts. One man's trash is another man's treasure, sooner or later, someone will need it and want to buy it. Oh & BTW I think you posted in the wrong area, this should be in the lounge.
