vavle covers

Post by 02ssei »

appears i have to change the valve cover gaskets. went and priced them at two local parts stores. lol.. i about fell over. i expected a high of around $20. nope. turns out the n/a engines are around $12 and the supercharged ones are anywhere from $52 - $71. luckily rockauto has them for as low as $39 with the grommets.

question is, should i go ahead and replace the grommets or check it out before i order them? i can leave the car parked for a few days so it's no big deal to tear it down and leave it.

Replace the grommets, especially if they come with the gaskets. Do it once, make sure it's gonna last, IMHO.

It's a 2 hour job at most, if you decide to clean up the VC's. Brake cleaner, kerosene or a parts washer, if you have access, work good.

Can someone tell me how to remove the rear valve cover? There's a large "mount" on the passenger side of it that seems to be in the way. I'm hesitant to remove it as there's coolant hoses and all sorts of stuff connected to it, plus one bolt is kinda hidden and hard to get to.

Any tricks to this?

You have to drain the coolant and remove that tensioner assembly. You'll want to replace the two coolant elbows that go from it to the LIM and block.

Thanks Ed, that's exactly what I needed. I wish I would've known this ahead of time so I'd have the right size box end wrench I need to get one of the bolts out. :banghead:

They should all be 13 or 15 MM, and a socket is the best tool for the job.
