front mount

Hi pretty new here, been enjoying searching the forums. Question is about my front motor mount. There are visible cracks on the top. I'm sure its bad. How urgent is this problem? I know it has to be fixed, but I'm wondering if I need some time before I get it fixed, will the car be OK. Thanks for any comments.

Get it fixed sooner rather than later. The later you put it off, the more it's gonna harm the rear mount and potentially damage the case of the trans.

I changed mine in an afternoon, get a can of WD-40, some rags, Deep metric sockets (make sure you have an 18mm), a jack for the motor and a set of ramps. Honestly, it was better than I thought. Made a HUGE difference in the car. I bought the mount from Napa for about 60 bucks. it isn't a bad job, but you just need some time. Also, let the motor cool off, you might touch the manifold when trying to loosen up the bolts (like I did).

Mine took approximately an hour, including drilling the hockey pucks and everything. Search hockey puck mount on the site and you'll find the easiest, cheapest most permanent fix for the front mount. None of the stock style mounts last worth crap.

Thanks guys. Yea I meant only waiting a few weeks. So the mount is bad if it has cracks right?

Well, yes... But more more importantly, the mount is bad if your engine jumps around in your motor compartment, shaking the whole car.

Simple test: Open hood, get inside, start car. Put foot on brake, shift into reverse. Shift back into Drive. Keep an eye on your engine while you do this (and foot on the brake!) Does the motor jump around with a jolt? A slight amount of movement is normal, but if it looks like it's on the verge of tearing itself loose then it's time for a new front mount.

Yea it does shake the car when I put it inreverse, it has for a while. I didn't think anything of it as I am not a skilled mechanic. But I will get it taken care of ASAP thanks all for replying!

Adam,
Make your own front mount, its easy and cheap and better than ANY mount you will buy.
I made the first solid mount for the 2000 SSEi and have over 200k miles on it and all the other mounts are stock and in great shape. Its that front mount that takes all the pounding so do yourself a favor and make one.

thank you guys again, im just nervous about the actual installation of the mount because i've never done it before, and i know you have to jack the motor up right? my dad will help, i just want to know what im getting myself into i guess. if there is anyone who can provide a detailed step by step, or if there is an existing thread, that would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

Use a block of wood on a floor jack to support the engine. It needs to hold the engine where it's supposed to be, not force it up.

I changed the mount last year almost to the day. It did not help whatsoever. The old mount was shot, so I replaced it with a new OEM part, but I noticed no change or improvement. There is engine movement, just dont know how much is too much. I think the rear mount needs replacing, but theres no way Im doing that on my own.

It took me many hours because its the first time Ive ever worked on my car myself, and with only a primitive Stanley toolset I bought in Walmart. If I had better tools, or better yet pneumatic tools it would have been much easier and faster. Its pretty straightforward, but *dang* the studs holding the bracket onto the block were so *dang* tight.

I replaced mine about six months ago (with an Anchor brand replacement mount from Rock Auto), and noticed about an 80% improvement.

That would be my luck, to have the front mount fixed and have other mount go bad as well. I sure hope this is what I need.

Also today just from the heck of if I got on the accelerator and when I let off the pedal the car jolts is his still consistant with a mount? I still haven't gotten it fixed.
