when i turn my bonneville on the check gages light comes on and dings my grandpa always told me to check the gas cap i have thats not it so im wondering if its something else

First of all, is this with the key on, or the car running?
Secondly, is it check gauges or check engine/service engine soon?

If it's check gauges, are any of the gauges reading abnormally?
If it's check engine/service engine soon, have you pulled codes using the procedure in Techinfo?

its with the keys in and the car on my grandpa and i got to working on and come to find out its the altanator we got it fixed
