Radio on the fritz

Post by jedwards83 »

Something in my factory stereo has gone goofy in the AM/FM receiver.

It used to switch stations instantly when hitting a preset. Now there's a ~2 second delay, and several buttons don't tune, rather the display switches to "ALL SEARCH..." and hangs there. When I try to program stations it sometimes work, but then other presets go to "ALL SEARCH..." instead of the normal station. Worse yet, I can't really tell what it's doing half the time as the left hand bulb doesn't work, something I need to fix someday.

Has anyone heard of this [besides the bulb issue]?

Yep, I had that problem too.
Found the fault to be somewhere on the main board (swapping face plate with known good one did not fix the problem).
This means you will not be able to avoid the trip to dealer for programming your replacement head unit.

harofreak has replacement OEM stereos if you want to stay factory. I got a cassette/cd unit from him, all lights worked, fast shipping.

Check with various GM dealers for programing the replacement unit. A Buick/Chevy dealer did mine for $30, made an appointment and was out of there in 15 minutes.

I think I have it fixed now. I was fiddling with buttons, and at one point I held the AM/FM button and it flashed "AF OFF" on the screen. It's now working like it used to, though I have no idea what that function does. I guess I'll have to break out the manual.

Glad it was an easy fix.
