Paint sealant or wax?

Post by SSEiMan01 »

I am wondering about some things I have heard regarding sealants vs. waxes.
I know a good bit about detailing, but this is one thing I am unsure of.
I have heard that Sealant should be used INSTEAD of wax and that if you wax on top of sealant (like I do), that it will render the sealant "ineffective" so to speak. And that because sealant can tolerate more heat, hence protecting the paint more (?), wax should not be used on paint that has a sealant on it.
For the record when I wax, every other wax I use sealant. Anytime I do a detail for someone, I usually do Clay bar, Compound, Swirl remover, Glaze or polish, Sealant, and then wax. Based on this chart; http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/autogeek/flowchart.jpg
I am basically asking, Should sealant be used INSTEAD of wax, or is using sealant and then following that with a coat of wax a good idea?

Yes, but the information I heard was from a person who does work on restoring paint not just repainting, and was wondering if anybody has heard anything one way or the other.

Sealant lasts longer than wax. Hence it creates a good base that you can wax over for a while. Sealant then wax will work fine. ;)

Wax over sealant is the best of both worlds.

Yes, put the wax over a sealant. They're complimentary, not mutually exclusive.

I use Meguiars ULTIMATE products and if necessary, I am also a fan of the Professional Meguiars line.
As for wax, on my own cars I use Pinnacle Souveran, Liquid or paste depending on colour. Anything else, with some exceptions, gets Ultimate liquid or paste.
Wake, I like that picture... nice work

You should try Fuzion as a winter wax. Apply 2 coats 24 hours apart for a nice finish that will last you all winter. Then go back to the Souveran in the spring/summer.

I had been using liquid Souveran on light colors and picked up a tub of paste Souveran earlier this spring. I am very happy with the Souveran on dark colors.

Definitely use both! I used Liquid Glass (sealant) under Meguiars NXT (wax) and the result was great, hid a lot of surface imperfections and added a deep shine.
