with people with the column shifter, i notice when they put the car in reverse then back up i see some will throw it in drive and i seen some that will complete stop then put it in drive, whats the correct way? throw it in drive or wait for the car to make a complete stop

I personally think you should let the car come to a complete stop first rather than shifting it into drive while in a backwards roll, even if slow. I don't know, just me. I don't think anything that makes a transmission go "clunk" or jolt into gear is good for it, so since it's easy to avoid doing, just don't do it. May not make too much of a difference either way, but why add to the wear?

Always come to a complete stop first. While it's not as extreme, throwing your car in reverse on the highway will kill your trans. Shifting before you're stopped can cause damage over time. My dad actually destroyed the transmission in his old dodge neon by shifting out of reverse to drive too quickly when he was in a hurry.

If you can get an electronically controlled bonneville transmission into reverse on the highway, you've got a problem...

If you were able to get it into reverse on the highway you'd pop the engine with a severe over-rev.

Really to avoid the stresses on the trans you need to come to a complete stop first...

I never have and still don't... Not a good thing to do... But in my ship, its like this... I can either R&R the trans or rebuild it myself... So no real problem for me... as well at 189,000 Miles on the 95... If it goes it goes... I could just imagine how tired the reverse reaction is in it....

you should come to a complete stop first, just lots easier on parts that have to start moving in the opposite direction. GM put out a tv commercial in the early to mid 90's showing the durability of the 440T4 (4T60-e can't remember which one it was for exactly) and they did a series of WOT reverse to drive shifts in a row!! Can't find it on youtube but sure wish I could. I remember thinking of how many idiots are going to go outside, get in their cars and try that...

I normally don't make it to a complete stop for reverse-to drive shifts, but i do for drive-to-reverse shifts.

Well remember, I do drive a '99 Lesabre, so it doesn't have all the fancy electronics the Bonne's are equipped with :p my shifter moves at anytime once it's in gear.

Whether the shifter moves or not isn't the issue. The transmission is still Electronically controlled, and if you put it in reverse on the highway, the gear should NOT engage. The PCM won't let it. HOWEVER, if the PCM fails to catch it, you just smoked your trans and left a trail of parts for the wrecker to follow.

Regardless, always come to a complete stop before shifting from R to D or D to R.

I once hit R going downhill at 30 mph when overshooting OD from a lower gear. The engine stalled and the car kept coasting. I popped the transmission into N ASAP, re-started the engine, and gingerly drove on. Everything was just fine.

I always come to a complete stop before shifting. It makes sense to keep stresses to a minimum.

I usually slow to less than 1 mph and put it into drive. My dad seems to put the vehicles into D at a decent clip, and while there's some slip in there, it's not something I recommend.
