Glass Pack

Post by jmal843 »

Do glass packs make a difference? Where exactly do you install? I know you can't have a v8 sound without the tomato juice, but I know these 3800's can. I met a guy with a 00+ supercharged monte carlo obviously before they started putting 8's in them again. Moving forward it was beast sounding. was wondering if glass would have anything to do with making these things growl

Were all still missing 2 cylinders to make them really growl. Pretty much any muffler other than stock only amplifies the V6 sound. Glass packs or removing the resonator will only make the 3800 sound like crap. It is just a sound that can't be achieved by a V6.

I know I'm gonna get crap for this post, but it's true.

In the end though to each his own, we will all do what we have our minds set on anyway.
If you think you'll like it go with it, it's your car anyway.

Cylinder count doesn't have much to do with growl, it's about header and exhaust design. Some of the biggest "growl" cars our there, are turbo'd H-4's in Subbies. Replacing the unequal length stock exhaust manifolds with equal length headers really takes away a lot of the sound.

Series II manifolds are pretty terrible sounding, series 1 are decent. The only series II i've ever been VERY happy with the exhaust had a major change in headers, turbo, etc..

BonneMe's got a good point. that being said, the best sound i've gotten from mine so far is an OEM F-body muffler with dual tips. growl with no fart. the glasspack was hoooorrriiiibbllleee...

Thanks guys I really appreciate the insight. With that said should I do headers/down pipe and high flow cat?

You'd be replacing your mufflers with glasspacks, and it would sound like a honda with a fart-can. You're not gonna gain any power with them, but my recommendation is that if you want to gain a louder sound get either headers or a 3" Downpipe and a high-flow cat and a pair of magnaflow mufflers.

Firing order has a lot to do with it too. Subs sound ricey to me, yes deeper, but still not like a V8. Actually I don't even like how V10s and V12s.

Firing order is another point that can go along with what I was trying to point out originally.

You just can't get a V8 sound from any other type of motor, other than a V8. Each motor has its own unique sound that it makes when running. Just like the original Buick V6 has its own unique sound.

Just take off the stock mufflers and put these on
http://www.holley.com/types/Aero%20Chamber.asp
Your car will sound great, I've had these mufflers on my '00 SSEi for over 200k miles and thay sound the same today as they did when I put then on.
Anyone who has heard my car says how good it sounds(it even won best exhaust at WCBF '06).

I didn't say a Subaru sounded like a V8, just had a lot of growl.... Hell, My car has a lot of growl compared to most V8's. Totally down to a crazy high flow cat, 3" exhaust, and a "muffler" a decent distance before the tip. The more time you have after the muffler in the pipe, the more the sound can reverberate and echo. In the car it sounds very smooth, but driving around with the hatch open a few times, I learned just how rough it sounds!
Changing the primary lengths is similar to firing order differences. Basically different delays between cylinders making noise... This is why Boxer engines have a distinct rumble when stock, and why many I-4's sound very smooth. Most 4's are transversely mounted, and have equal manifold lengths coming down the front of the engine, into a single exhaust pipe.

I preferred the noise from my 1993 with a Flowmaster 80 series over the exact setup + resonator (94+ had resonator) when I heard them side by side. Alternatively, it was almost at the limit of being too loud for a DD, and very aggressive/clear ( MUCH more burble without the resonator.) Having subs definitely made it much more tolerable. Only rasp i'd ever hear was when you were in neutral and had been revving it high (bad) and it went down. I really should find all of those clips I used to have online to help compare different setups.

I had a couple old guys ask me if It was a V8 (one asked 305 or 350 lol). Obviously they didn't know anything... :bluetwitch:

It all boils down to what jamal843 wants his car to sound like.
We all have differing opinions on what makes a car sound good and look good. Jamal843 will have to decide what route he wants to take with his car. You know where I stand on this which is ok because its just my honest opinion.

FYI, a glasspack when new will have a tinny sound until it matures. It'll stay that way for a year or two, then gradually change again over time as the packing material starts to clog with carbon.

Different means better. You'll have 3 cylinders feeding 1, and 3 feeding the other, slightly out of phase with each other, giving a much more even mellow deep tone. The hookers on the 2k dual-muffler setup make an amazing nipple-hardening sound. Live sound is much better than recorded. rrounds speaks the truth when he raves about his award-winning exhaust.

I've personally heard more variations on exhaust (especially the 2k and newer) than any member here. Year after year at WCBF, and in my travels to PA and MN.

Nothing can touch the Hooker Aerochamber on the 2k. Nothing. Even on an otherwise stock exhaust.
