"Changed Transmission Fluid, found something interesting"
changed fluid today in 2002 SSEI and to me it didn't look all that bad except for the cylinder looking piece of metal i found on the magnet, could someone zoom in on it and tell me what the piece could possibly be and should i be concerned? I can try to get another pic of it if needed but the best way i can describe it is it round (hollow in the middle) and has what looks to be a machined cut down one side.

Re: changed fluid
The square part in the upper part of pic? That's the pan magnet, supposed to be there. Grabs all the fine metal parts.

Re: changed fluid
Take a closer picture. That looks like a roll pin, and is very likely the early warning of impending doom. That looks very much like the roll pin that locks the pinion into the differential.

if you zoom in on 1st photo you will see this item stuck to magnet..round (hollow in the middle) and has what looks to be a machined cut down one side.

Re: changed fluid
Definitely a roll pin. Do you have any strange noises coming from your trans? Whining, clunking, any of that?
Also, next time, please be more specific on which fluid you changed. Obviously we all know that it's transmission fluid, but w/ your title it could've been engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, etc. Please also make your title clearer. A better title for this thread could be: "Changed Transmission Fluid, found something interesting" or something like that. Just so we know there might be an issue, and so we can view it and help you. For all we know, you're just bragging about what you did until we actually view the post.

Re: changed fluid
Just gonna have to start saving your pennies for a transmission and praying that it lasts.
Also, just so you know my post was just some constructive criticism, not trying to be mean, just trying to help you make your post as good as possible.

Re: changed fluid
I don't think there is any real danger, but when it goes, it's probably going to be a catastrophic failure of some sort. Could be tomorrow, could be 6 months.
I think 2002 transmissions are specific to that year. Check on www.car-part.com for a used one, which will probably be $600 + install. A re-manufactured unit will be about $1600 + install, and a rebuild will be around $2200 all said and done.

Re: changed fluid
Right now, the trans is not at risk. If it's the rollpin from the differential pinion, it can be repaired separately.
If you can replace an axle, you can replace a differential.

Re: changed fluid
Could someone please point me to a good reasonably priced differential rebuild kit for this 2002 SSEI
Did some searching and found a pretty good post on how to do this. The cheapest 4T65E-HD Differential i have found at this point is $160..also found some sprocket sets for 50$..from what i have read my car has 3.29 gear ratio. So my next question is if i need sprockets only which sprockets give the 3.29 gear ratio?
The available options are-
-33 Drive / 37 Driven
-35 Drive / 35 Driven
-37 Drive / 33 Driven
Not sure exactly what all i need yet as i haven't tore into it yet but just trying to get needed info beforehand
still haven't found a kit that includes everything needed.

Re: changed fluid
When I have them, I usually sell the HD diff, cover & output shaft for $120 shipped. Example (these are sold already): http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... 27&t=21629
You could check ClubGP for a diff. Tim King probably has one too.
This site should have all the info you could want: http://tripleedgeperformance.com/4T65E_Tech_Info.html

Re: changed fluid
No Jake, the 4T65E-HD has a 3.29 Ring and Pinion (or whatever the gears are actually called in the FWD diff, spur and star?) but it's under driven to a 2.93 by the chain-set (that's the 33/37 he's referring to). I'm not sure exactly why it was done that way, but that's what GM did. Might have been to get off the line a little better but still get good mileage, who knows.
The 33/37 has nothing to do with what you want to replace, gold8165. You want the differential and housing, not the chain gears. You will need to find the diff out of a car with the 4T65E-HD, any from 97-05(?)(donor car should have the Series II Supercharged) should work, as far as I know. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: changed fluid
Parts came today all looks good.I layed the broken rollpin beside the differential to compare. The broken rollpin lines up exactly were it looks like it would break if to much torque was applied to the differential.Laying the broken rollpin beside the differential the break would be right were i added this pointer using one of Haros pix
