I was impressed, he got $5900 from insurance for the car. Buy-back was only $650. He bought it back, is putting the rims on his Mustang, and is selling me the rest of the car for $550.

Considering he will have bought the car twice, and make money on it both times...yeah, I'd say he'd make out alright ;)

It should be easy for you to recover $550 by selling the parts. Thats a good deal!
