Winter Wheels & Tires on the GXP!

Post by 00Beast »

Well, as I said in my other thread, we finally convinced my dad to get a set of winter tires for his GXP.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=23018

We decided on wheels and tires, the wheels being Elbrus I04's (17 x 7.5) and the tires being General Altimax Arctic, 235/55R17 99Q. Ordered from Tire Rack Tuesday with an expected arrival date of the 18th, and they arrived today!! I just about crapped when the UPS guy rolled in this morning.

GXP owners, these wheels also clear the calipers, by a solid 1/4 inch.

For the little driving we've done, they seem WAY better than the half bald Kumho's that were on there, and will keep him out of the ditch, or someone else's rear end. Plus, no more getting stuck in the Walgreen's parking lot!

Anyways, on to the pics (Yes, it's my yard, yes, it's dirty. Just want to show how it looks):

Great look, Ed! You'll love those tires... just take it easy on the highway ramps, shimmy the wheel around at speed when it isn't snowing and you'll see the flex :P

Not too many on-ramps around here. Nearest freeway is almost an hour away. There definitely is more squirm though.

I got these at the dealer, swampthing. $25 per pair. I forgot to ever write down the PN, though. They're about $9 cheaper from GMPD, but that way you know you'll be able to get them.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I know these tires will keep Dad on the road no matter the weather.

I had a blast last night with mine. I think i finally cracked the code for having fun in the snow with this car. Most fun ive had driving a car since, well, ever. It was like someone installed a rear driveshaft while i wasnt looking.

Your dad should enjoy those. Once it gets REALLY cold, they feel just like all-seasons. Last night it was 7*F out on the drive back from my folk's house. At 65 MPH on the interstate the Generals felt identical to my Pirelli all-seasons. They handled just like them, too, on the off-ramps and turns.

Just wait until a big snow or a big drift. Your GXP won't notice it with those on. Mine have been great in the snow/slush/junk in the 2 months they've been on the Buick.
