Transmission mounts...

Post by psburtis »

apparently, i have 3 bad transmission mounts that need to be replaced. i should be able to drive conservatively for a while, but will need them sooner than later. what years can i get them off of, and about how much should i pay for all three? do any members have a few extra mounts they wouldn't mind getting rid of? thanks!

go to your local parts store, rockauto.com, or a favorite online parts store. Don't go used. Expect at least $100.

a little high I guess

remember the club discount code stickied somewhere

Do NOT buy used mounts. Ever. If one fails early and you don't know it, the others will soon follow due to the added stress. Would you buy used wiper blades? Same principle applies here or even stronger.

Which 3 of the 4 mounts is bad?

Which are the three you got? If he said trans, you can rule out the torque-axis mount, but if it has slop, it'll kill your other 3 mounts just as well. It's also the most expensive.

Mounts are:
Torque Axis (by water pump to fender)
Front trans (below TB between frame and front of trans on driver's side, has hydraulic strut)
Rear Trans (behind trans also on the driver's side)
Dogbone (on rear of tailshaft housing....diff cover....on passenger side to subframe)

The last three in my list are trans mounts. TA mount is a motor mount.

rock auto doesn't list the TA mount, but shop around. the national auto part stores throw all kinds of deals.

Yeah, those are pretty good. I remember that Travis paid like $90 for the front mount from Advance, just because there wasn't any other available that day, lol.

Noticing when shifting into reverse is most likely your rear trans mount on the driver's side. Shifting into drive would be the front driver's side mount. If you open your hood and watch through the crack between the cowl and hood, you should see the motor jump in each direction when shifting. Doesn't sound like you need visual confirmation though!

well, it jumps a bit when shifting into drive, and when shifting IN drive between 1st and 2nd gear most noticeably, but i can tell its jumping more than it was before between the other gears as well. i'm driving VERY conservatively right now, unfortunately..... :sadeyz:

quick update: while having my oil changed last saturday, i asked the mechanic to check out the transmission mounts and let me know how bad they are and about how much time i have on them. he said they looked fine, but my vacuum hose was broken. he fixed it, and now my car shifts beautifully, just like before :banghead:

I had already ordered the transmission mounts, and am going to have them replaced, but just some advice for those of you out there who are getting hard shifts, check your vacuum hose first, it may save you some money.

replacing transmission and motor mounts should be done anyway, as well as subframe mounts. I wouldn't call it a waste of money. Glad your shifting is corrected though.

Agreed. I wasn't implying that it was a waste of money, just that a broken vacuum hose can sometimes act like bad mounts, and vise versa.
