Daughters Jeep has hole in transfer case

Post by sm in Georgia »

Any one with leads to a replacement? Preferably used!!!

Of course, she leaves for College on Monday- so there is no way she is getting it replaced this weekend. But if we can get our hands on one, she can drive down and get it put on one weekend. She will only be about 100 miles away.

I told her it would seem that someone had been driving and put the 4 wheel drive into low while moving down the road. She said that it was entirely possible that would have been her. She said she thought she could change over to 4 wheel as long as she did not press the gas, she now understands that the best bet is to come to a complete stop before putting it into 4 wheel low. Hubby is disconnecting the 4 wheel drive until we can locate the part.

So if anyone has any leads for me, I would be extremely grateful!!

First off, you should never use 4 Lo on the highway. It's designed for low speed. 4 Hi is more than most people ever need.

Secondly, it should not be driven in its current condition. Check www.car-part.com.

absolutely!! She should have never changed into it period. We tend to think that it might have been teenage hi-jinks - in other words we are not sure she did it or one of her friends but she is taking the blame. My husband removed the drive shaft today.

Thanks - I will check the link you posted!!

we are near Atlanta- I am getting a quote from one in my area. Most of the ones that had prices were from $500 and up. but thanks for the heads up. We have a pull apart near us that we have used on several occasions -

All the fluid in the transfer case is going to pour out of that hole...do NOT drive it. Using or not using 4WD is not going to make any difference.

#-o Did you explain to your daughter that, assuming it is an automatic, you can put the transfer case lever in 4WD high range when driving but in order to go into 4WD low range you have to stop completely and put the transmission in neutral.

Driving the XJ now is not recommended since it has probably broken internal parts and lost most of the transmission fluid. It only holds 1 1/2 qts.

I will probably be parting out my XJ but live way over here on the West Coast.............three provinces away from Winnipeg just north of Washington state BTW............pick a part from the salvage yard.

Paul,

so far my quotes are $500 to $750 - :eek2: havent checked with pull apart due to holidays.

I have NOW explained to her -AD NAUSEUM!! - that one does not shift into 4lo whilst traveling down the road EVER at ANY speed - I believe it is the 12th commandment - right after the original 10, and the 11th - Kill them all and let God sort them out. I am so careful - I come to a complete stop shifting into 4hi too!
We tend to think that perhaps she was not the one who did it, but knows who did and is not wanting to drop a dime on whomever it is. She assured me no one else has been driving the car (an insurance issue) but methinks perhaps someone could have reached over from the passenger seat, being stupid (teenagers are never stupid are they? I am really not as stupid as my kids think I am - it is just the clothes I wear that make me look stupid!! I am convinced that my kids get lobotomies when they are 15 and only figure out when they are 22+ that I "may" have actually known what I was talking about when they were teens!!! Trouble is getting from age 15 to age 22 without killing them.

Yeah you are too far away - too bad!! Could have been like an organ donation - part of your XJ living on in Georgia!!

I have a transfer case from a Grand Cherokee. I don't know how far you are willing to drive to pick one up but willing to let it go for cheap. (or rather much less than what the junkyards want)

I'm in southern wisconsin
