Check Engine Light
It's been a while since I've been on the forum. My last post talked about me having tranny issues and I'm still having them. My check engine light will come on when the car is cold and I've had the codes scanned which came up to be the air intake temperature sensor. I replaced the sensor and the light is still on. In first gear, (no matter how easy or hard I am on the throttle) it will hit the rev limiter before shifting. It also won't go into overdrive. Once the car is at operating temp it will shift into overdrive and drive just like nothing's wrong and if I shut the car off the check engine light goes off. However, recently the light will eventually come back on. I'm really not sure how to make heads or tails of the issue and I'm just looking for a clue of where to start troubleshooting.
Thanks for the help,
Derek

Re: Check Engine Light
Oh left out another detail. The cruise control does not work unless the car actually shifts into overdrive. If it does in fact shift into overdrive the cruise control will work fine until it comes to the point where it kicks the transmission out of overdrive and then the cruise control is once again inoperable.

Re: Check Engine Light
Well, I don't know where to start as I do good to keep my '92 SSE running to my satisfaction. I do know that on mine, if the check engine lite is on that 1) it will not go into overdrive and 2) the cruse control will not work. I also know that when the Climate Control (A/C and heater) is on the fritz, the check engine lite comes on.
I do suggest that you watch eBay for a complete set of used Factory Service Manuals from Helm. They are still quite expensive from Helm (I think about $100). I couldn't have kept mine running without them. They paid for themselves within just a couple of weeks. - Example the ABS lite came on, the dealer wanted $1500 to fix it. I fixed it for $11. It was a defective relay.
Good luck! - BC

One portion solved. The lock-up clutch will not engage on any of these vehicles until they are warm enough. Usually 2-3 miles depending on temperature.

Re: Check Engine Light
Not quite. When i say "warm up" I mean starting and running for ten to fifteen minutes in the current weather that we have in Illinois now (just above freezing to about 15*) before leaving and then I have to drive for approximately five or so minutes before the car will shift into overdrive. And that is on the highway so roughly five to six miles after being warmed up to about 3/4s operating temperature.Winn wrote:One portion solved. Re: Check Engine Light
Warm means transmission temp, not engine temp. The transmission doesn't start to warm up until you drive it. The little bit of fluid that goes through the radiator doesn't have any significant affect on the trans temp.
How old is your fluid and what color is it? Does it smell burned? If you remove the vacuum line from the modulator on the front of the trans does it smell like trans fluid? Do you have any vacuum leaks?

Re: Check Engine Light
I recently did a vacuum test and it didn't show any signs of leaks. I can try and check the vacuum hose on the modulator tomorrow. I added a half pint of seafoam trans tune tonight and I'm going to change the fluid on Saturday possibly.

Change the transmission fluid and filter before you do anything else.
Bet that helps.

Get a scantool on it and tell us the rpm's of slip with the TCC locked up in OD and cruise control set.

You need one. Plain and simple. Anything else you do is throwing money at a problem, hoping for a fix.

Re: Check Engine Light
Well I'm looking to upgrade to an 00-03 SSEi so if I purchase something it will need to be compatible with both. I've been looking at the Aeroforce line. Which one would be the best? I want to resolve the issue with the '95 because it will most likely be sold and I don't want it leaving with a bunch of issues that someone else has to deal with it.willwren wrote:You need one. Re: Check Engine Light
Aeroforce does not support your 95. Your car is an OBD1 PCM with an OBD2 connector. It is not fully OBD2 compatible.
