Intermittant stalling, no RPM
Intermittant stalling, no RPM
HI All, 2000 SSEi, 120,000 miles- Driving along at 70 mph, cruise on- all of a sudden I lose RPM's, oil pressure, engine dies, "change engine oil" light comes on. Pull off, starts right up, no RPM's on the guage, but engine running, oil pressure good. Stop , check oil, everything OK. It has done this intermittantly over the last 3-4 months- I have not pulled any codes- Last big change was the MAF (car wouldn't run) and another elcetronic part close to the MAF (cause it was cheaper).
Any ideas of what to look for that might cause an intermittant problem?

Is the check engine light on? If so, get the code and we'll go from there.

Hi Again, Finally got to pulling codes-
P0336- crankshaft position sensor A CKT range/perf
P0443- EVA emission control system purge valve C fault
Any help will be appreciated- also, links to other discussions on these would be great- or are these parts that just need to be replaced- and if so- simple wrench job or careful, adjust ohms, mark how it cam out- expect lots of oil to spill, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Intermittant stalling, no RPM
P0443 shouldn't cause a stalling problem so I'd concentrate on the crank sensor.

The first thing is to check the wiring harness from the ICM that runs down to the cam sensor and the crank sensor and make sure the connectors are clean and on all the way. Make sure it is not rubbing on anything and is in good shape. You could even remove it and check each wire.
To replace the CPS:
1. Raise the front of the vehicle so the right wheel can be removed. Use all safety precautions here- parking brake, jack stands etc.
2. Remove the right side wheel liner
3. Remove belt(s) from motor
4. Remove dust cover from flex plate access
5. Have someone hold the flex plate with a screwdriver in the teeth
6. Using an air impact or a breaker bar with a long handle, turn counter-clockwise on the bolt holding the HB on (this is very tight and will take a lot of force to get it to loosen up)
7. Using a HB puller and 6mm x 80mm bolts with washers (needed to keep the bolts from sliding through the puller and to make up for the length on the bolts), remove the HB from the crank
8. Disconnect connector, remove the plastic cover and 2 bolts holding sensor to the front cover
9. Assembly is opposite of removal
Others feel free to add anything I missed.

Re: Intermittant stalling, no RPM
Thanks for the info on the crank pos sensor- if it shows the code it "usually" means its the part or the circuit, right?
Also does anyone know the rotation of the crank in relation to the crank HB bolt? My old Diamante said to put a breaker bar and socket on the bolt, make sure the breaker bar contacts the ground, then hit the starter and the bolt becomes loose very quickly and easily. Don't know if i can do that with my SSEi?
Are there any adjustments/gaps that need to be set when I reinstall it or is it a simple unbolt/bolt operation?
Thanks agian!

Don't use the starter. It's lefty loosy. I'm 90% sure that your 00 doesn't need adjustment, bolt in and go.

Re: Intermittant stalling, no RPM
Thanks for everybody's help in replacing the Crank Position sensor- the How-To's were right on-= total time to replace and be back on the road about 3 hours- had to stop for beer breaks! Socket sizes, thoughts and ideas made this smoooth.
And the CEL is out!
Thanks again.
