Timing Chain Replacement S2 L67
Today when I drove off the highway and came to a stop I noticed a loud rattling coming from the right front of the car. Took off and it went away. I pulled into work and examined under the hood. The noise is around the pulleys. Again, pushing the throttle made it go away. I will remove the belts and start the car to rule out pulleys. The locomotive mechanics at work seem to think that the timing chain tensioner broke so the chain is just flapping around at idle and when throttle is applied it tightens back up. I'm not sure of that idea. However, if I do need to replace it, what are the tools and gaskets that i'll need? I just don't want any surprises. I know, asking a lot. I only have Monday off next week so it will need to be done that day.

Harmonic Balancer is bad.
Remove the belts and I bet the noise goes away when started.

Hope you're right. I'll take the belts off tomorrow and see what happens. What causes it to rattle like that? There is no wobbling.

There is a layer of rubber that gets old and comes loose and allows metal to metal contact.

Yup, harmonic balancer it is. What is the size of the bolt on that thing?

You can use this method from techinfo for removing the balancer.
