Anyone taken a GXP to the track?

Post by Bigerik »

Just curious to know what the GXP runs in the quarter mile. From what I have seen, it could be anywhere from 14.5-15.5. Wondering if anyone has actually run their Bonneville GXP on the track.

I'm still trying to talk my dad into that one, lol. Hasn't happened yet. I'm guessing it'll be 14.6-14.9, based on power and torque vs. a stock SSEi.

When did you get a GXP? You know we want pics!!!

Most that we've seen documented (none from here) run low 15's to high 14's.

Well, lean on your dad and get him to the track. Inquiring minds want to know! :)

I am hoping to get mine down to a 14 flat by the summer. Will be interesting to see how that works.

PIcs? No good ones yet. Jerry might have gotten a good one at the meet yesterday.

14 flat is going to be tough with very little aftermarket support and no PCM support. This has been the case since the first GXP was purchased.

I forgot you had one. But that's right in the expected 'zone' we've been seeing for the last 3 or 4 years.

My ssei stock runs about a tenth quicker at the same track/conditions. Both cars had gutted airboxes. I wish you good luck hitting the 14 flat but if your really looking to go fast you should mod that LSS. Gxp sounds so sweet though.

edit - reminiscing of the sound

The LSS will soon be history. If all goes well, it will be sold by next week.
Lots of good stuff in mind for the GXP. Really should not be THAT hard if all goes well.

Thanks for the info!

What are your plans? $500 tune, mufflers, Custom CAI?

Don't know about the mufflers, and I have heard that aside from sound, there is not that much to be gotten out of the intake. STS cams might be nice tho. :)
Still working out the details. Will post more once I have a better handle on what I want to do and how it will all work.

If you wanted sts cams you should of had the guy put them in when he offered it with the car. He was offering to put sts cams in it before he put the motor back together if the buyer requested it.

No chance for that. Bought it complete and running.

But, that doesn't mean we can't correct the problem in the future! :)

Tuning is the issue tho. The PCM would not have liked the STS cams.

I'd say... leave the engine internals alone. You're opening up a pandora's box of pain when you start messing with this thing. It's a b*tch to simply get the cam covers off this engine, much less swapping cams! That is, unless you're dropping the whole thing out of the car. But that too is a bunch of work. Just Saturday I got around to doing my front cam cover gasket (the old one was leaking of course, dripping oil down onto the hot exhaust manifold, making the car very aromatic when sitting idling for awhile), and that job was a 3 hour job. You have to remove the water pump drive belt, idler mechanism, cam pulley, seal, then you can finally remove the cam cover. This does not include working around the upper cooling hose (technically you're supposed to remove it), and wiring harnesses over on the front passenger corner. The back is even more a PITA!

I love mine a lot, but I spend more time, doing sh*t to keep it from leaking oil, leaking coolant, and tracking electrical gremlins, on top of normal routine PM, so I wouldn't want mechanical breakage (namely the 4T80E or front halfshafts) from added horsepower on top of it. I'm at 76k now, and I think come 100k, it's gone.

Power mods, I've done;
- My own CAI
- Mufflers
- 180* t-stat
- NGK TR55 plugs

Car is noticably quicker, much better sounding, sharper throttle response, etc, but I'd wager it's still a mid 14 - low 15 second car. This thing isn't a drag racer. It's a WOT high blaster. I'm actually thankful there ISN'T an aftermarket for this car as it keeps me from frivolously spending money. ;)

About the only N* I'd add serious power to would be that in an STS-V, but that's more to do with the fact that I don't have to deal with the recalcitrant 4T80E and FWD parts as that car is RWD. :)
