Hi Guys:
Can anyone tell me if I have to remove the harmonic balancer to replace a CPS on an 89 Bonneville 3800?
Is there a way of testing it?

The balancer has to come off. I belive an oscilloscope is needed to check the signal from the crank sensor.

I'm pretty sure an 89 balancer is not press fit, so once you get the bolt off, it should come off by hand. If you don't have an impact wrench/drill, you'll have to hold the flywheel to get the bolt off. I've used a large screwdriver in the flywheel teeth.
The CPS may be adjustable, so find some scrap material or something else to gauge the distance between the crank and the CPS halls before you remove the original. That way, you can make sure the new one is where it should be. You may also want to test fit the balancer in place before you tighten it back on for good just to double check.

Re: Crank Position Sensor
When I replaced mine I held the sensor by hand so that the Blades on balancer were even between the sensor and I had my brother tighten it in place. worked great. I have heard of some people using paper to space it correctly also.
