88 SSE positioning sensor / ECM

Post by bwmiller »

My 88 SSE (178k) started running erratically a couple of weeks ago. I took it to a friends shop for a tune up. He replaced spark plug wires, plugs, filters... the works. Even a mortor mount. I got it back only to find the same old problem. It runs great for 5 - 10 mins then starts sputtering and dying.... then runs great for another 5 - 10 minutes. I took it back and he checked codes and stuff and now suspects ECM or crank shaft positioning sensor (I think he meant cam shaft positioning sensor). If it is either of these, will this be a big expensive deal? I've just put almost $700 into it and was not expecting that much. I'm original owner but maybe it's not worth it anymore. Advise please. //bm

If it is a camshaft position sensor, it would typically throw a code, but crankshaft sensors dont. Not to mention the latter is not too bad, just a matter of removing the harmonic balancer, replacing and realigning the sensor, then putting the HB back on.

I agree with your shop... Crank sensor or ECM..

Does the car stall at random?

yes it stalls at random after going into convultions for a minute. the guys at the shop said they think it is the ECM so I've authorized the replacement ($300) will know more in about a week.

replaced the ECM. That did the trick. Now after tune up, motor mounts, ECM, filters, all oils and antifreeze changed, it's ready to begin it's next 21 years. Oil pressure sending unit has the needle pegged so I can't really tell about the oil pressure but thinking of replacing the oil pump anyway. Next is a paint touch up and some interior electronics. Need to get the DIC and Compass working again. It's a fun old car.

Just put in a new OP sender, replacing the oil pump requires ripping off the entire front of the engine.

I'm told that replacing the OP sensor is relatively easy. I won't be replacing the oil pump unless it is life threatening to that old beast. How much did your OP sensor cost?

Under the passenger side Hush panel, look up under the dash... Its its original you should see a large silver box with 3 connectors, this will be the ECM..
