Does the whole transmission need to be replaced?

Post by likeamojay »

Almost every time I start accelerating, my 2000 Bonneville SSEi jerks back for a second every time it shifts gears. The shifting is not nearly as smooth as it used to be. Occasionally when I go up inclined roads the transmission will stay in between gears and the car will rock back and fourth. It's as if the clutch isn't engaging all the way. It has 132k miles on it, is the transmission even worth getting fixed?

The first thing I'd check is the front transmission mount. It may be torn badly, causing the engine to rock and giving you those symptoms. Many have replaced it with a modification using hockey pucks.

Searching for hockey puck, or solid mount will get you some. Here's one.

Why didn't GM incorporate more user friendly adjustment's and R-n-R 's into their Bonneville transmissions? Seems like clutch pressures and valve shift assemblies, etc should be adjustable/repairable.

Sounds like it could be the PCS or TCC solenoids.
