I pulled the Gentex 177 autodim/compass mirror out of the 99 PAU parts car of Dad's and while he's on vacation he asked if I could swap it into his 1990 Olds 98, which came from the factory with a Gentex 100 auto dim mirror.
Wire #'s listed below are taken from the wiring connectors.
Wires for 100:
3 black coated 20g wires in a ribbon strip
#1 is copper/gold which I'm assuming is 12V+ as are every other Gentex I've found wiring diagrams for
#2 is copper/gold wire again, which is what I'd assume is ground
#3 is a silver wire, which confuses me as to whether it is 12v+ ignition on or if it's a door or back up 12v+
Wires for the 177:
5 wires
#1 is a pink wire -most likely positive according to research
#2 is black with white stripe -according to research this is a ground
#3 is light green -according to research this is backup/reverse
#4 is grey -left or right mirror
#5 is brown -left or right mirror
My trouble is I've:
1. Connected the positives and the negatives -NO POWER
2. Connected all of the first 3 to it's corresponding wire from the opposite harness/pigtail -NO POWER
3. Connected Positive/Positive together, negative/negative/green/3rd wire from100 harness all together (4 wires) as I've seen others have done on my searches of Google -NO POWER
4,5,6,7 Messed around with different wires and no power.
Now I've hooked the 177 up in my 99 SSEi, which has the same plug as the 99 PAU, but the SSEi harness only has 3 wires vs the PAU's 5 wires. The autodim and compass work like a flawlessly.
What gives?
If I could get the SSEi's autodim mirror out(without further damage to the windshield) I'd try using the PAU connector and first 3 wires of its pigtail tied up to it's respectively #'ed wire on the 90 Olds GNTX100 harness.
Anyone ever successfuly done such a swap before or know how I can do it successfuly? I've got a good 5 hrs in researching testing.... all to no avail.

Re: Problem: 90 Olds 98 -upgrading Gentex 100 to Gentex 177
For the '90:
Terminal A (pnk/blk): Hot 12v from fuse 16
Terminal B (blk): Ground to passenger kick panel
Terminal C (lt.grn): Reverse Input for nighttime. Comes directly from the PRNDL switch reverse position.
For the '99
Terminal 1 (brn): Hot 12v from the "htd bk lt relay" in the rear fuse block.
Terminal 2 (blk/wht): Ground from rear of trunk area
Terminal 3 (lt.grn): Reverse input from the perimeter lamp relay
Terminal 4 (gry): Outside mirror control
Terminal 5 (pnk): Outside mirror control
Hopefully that helps!

5 hours of research? Come on Marty
You gotta get the right wiring diagrams to be able to do this. Don't you have the Techline ESI DVD?
