thanks for all the input. New topic from Ohio

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

Do research, contact vendors...If its your DD it all depends on what your goals are performance, economy, or both.

Shred, I'm glad you're realistic about things, haha.

With a cam, the Intense S1x or even the S2 cams are pretty much street cams. If you get the package, it'll come with pushrods and lifters, along with valvesprings, retainers, and even a timing chain set...

I also hope you're prepared to dump some money into your transmission, as well as supporting mods such as an intake, a full tune up and other things... You need to make sure that your car will be running perfectly in order to run a cam (read: NO KR)

OK, here's the basics:
To run a cam, you'll first need to to some intake/exhaust improvements. The absolute minimum is a good intake that draws actual OUTSIDE air, rather than drawing hot air from inside the engine bay. Intense has the best intake, but it's not hard to make your own for quite a bit cheaper.
Next, you need some real exhaust work. Some of the guys here use stock exhaust manifolds with some porting work, but I personally believe you should go straight to headers and a high-flow catalytic converter.
The transmission will also eventually need some work. The input shaft is prone to cracking under high torque, and the fourth gear clutch shaft tends to wear away its splines and drops fourth gear. Replace both with the heavy-duty versions from Intense and you're golden. While you're at it, go ahead and get the street-strip shift kit.
Finally, with added power comes more engine movement. You can tame that by replacing the front transmission mount hydraulic bushing with 3 hockey pucks and a few washers.

Find someone who has either a TechII scanner, or a tuning software suite, and have them scan your car while you're driving. Look for KR, and have them check for any problems like improper MAF or O2 readings. When you have everything running perfectly, then you're ready to start modding the actual motor. Remember, making power is all about air in/air out.

BTW, you live in a good area for 3800s...Intense is just on the other side of Columbus from you...
And if you do decide to use Intense parts, drop over to GOClupGP.com. The regular membership is free, but if you drop $20 on a Charter Membership, we have a 10% charter member discount for parts from Intense.
Finally, drop me a PM if you wanna get together sometime. I'm over in Galloway, but I'm in Pataskala about twice a week.
