Digital Displays

Post by slerby1st »

All the displays in my car go blank when in extreme sunlight. Is this normal or is there a problem with the twilight sentinal switch? They seem fad in and out more when I have the sunroof open. can someone please advise. Thanks

Do they actually change in brightness or is it that you cannot see the contrast when bright light hits the display? I suspect the later. It's just how LCD displays are.

They dim out when bright light hits them and sometimes they dim out for no apparent reason and when this happens I hear a clicking noise.

Sounds like the automatic headlights coming on and off.

By extreme sunlight, do you mean high noon, or in-your face sunlight at dawn and dusk? If it's the latter, the lighting conditions outside are getting just dark enough to trip the lights on and off. I just force 'em on manually in this case.

That really just sounds like a typical LCD display. The digits get washed out by direct light.

Is the clicking rapid and random, or just one click?

You could try unplugging the photo sensor.

Get a ScanGauge II. Then the gauges you need will always be visible no matter what the light.

I'd not unplug the photo sensor if you want to retain the auto-light feature.

I hear one click and the displays dim out and I would hear it again and the displays brighten. It only happens during the day light hours, more so when it is very bright out.

Sure sounds like the automatic headlights coming on at the wrong times.

Is there a sensor or relay for the auto headlights and so where is it found on the car.

Sensor is on the dash, right infront of you, little round black disc inside a hole, easy to see. Try cleaning off the top of it with a rag and windex or something of that nature.
