Painting hood soon, thinking about a scoop?

Discuss washing, waxing and detailing information as well as interior/exterior cosmetic modifications. This includes neons, body, cosmetic wheels, etc. Even under the hood detailing.

Painting hood soon, thinking about a scoop?

Post by SamuelL421 »

Well, I'll soon be painting the hood of my '00 ssei, I'll post pics within the next two days, but my hood has water getting under the paint from the front edge at the center. The bubbles in the hood are starting to become very noticeable, so before I get a real rust problem I figured I'd do a complete strip and repaint.

Since the hood is coming off for paint, I've been wondering how a hood scoop might look. Keep in mind if I do it, it will not be functional as, hopefully, I'll be getting the intense stage 1 with the fender intake later this summer. But I'm wondering what everyones opinions are as to the scoop idea. Good idea? Or too ricey? Also, does anyone have some pics of attractive/well done scoops on 00+ bonney's? I'm looking for any advice I can find from those who have done this before, so feel free to add your 2 cents.

I'm also trying to find a credible website with scoops that will fit or which are universal (and aren't ugly). I've been having trouble trying to figure out which scoops might be a relatively close fit as there are few sites with accurate information on the dimensions of their exterior parts. Either way, minor mods to fit the scoop aren't a big deal as I've got some experience with fiberglass and bodywork (but not enough that I'd be willing to attempt a scoop from scratch). I have an idea for a scoop that I'm going to photoshop after work sometime this week, if the idea turns out any good I'll post it up.

I personally think a scoop will look to ricey. I think how these cars are made, the hoods are just perfect the way they are. Now grant it, K-OtiK did a real nice job on his. But in his case he cut the stock hood and attached a grand-am scoop on to his hood. But that may be more work then you are looking for.

My vote would be keep it stock, just paint and you'll be good.

^ very true. If your really handy you can always make it custom like alexcoqui or K-Otik's car. Also remember its your car and your style, if you like it thats all that matters. I don't want me to seem like I'm bashing it or anything.

I've checked out both of their hoods and they look great. If it wasn't for those two guys work, I wouldn't have gotten the inspiration/courage to do this. Both look to be grand am / trans am hoods (?) and I was thinking of something similar.

I shouldve been more specific about my plans too, I only have average bodywork skills, but if I do the scoop I'm going to enlist my father who has years experience working in fiberglass. The plan is to find some fiberglass scoops, modify them to fit, and glass them in. The sky is basically the limit with this as long as the scoops I choose don't cost more than $200 and don't require some ridiculous amount of work to make fit. I've been searching the web for some long, medium to large sized, dual opening scoops, but so far have come up empty (something similar to alexcoqui or K Otik's). I was thinking the best route might be to go to a junkyard and try to find a car with a fiberglass hood that has dual ram air, maybe an older grand am gt hood?

My schedule is filling up for the week, but hopefully once I get some serious ideas going I'll photoshop some examples and put it to a vote. Again, I welcome any suggestions or ideas, I'd like to start tracking down some scoops soon as I'll be picking up my paint and clearcoat later this week. Hopefully I can start the project by the end of June.

EDIT: thats pretty close to what I was looking for Dan, where did you find your scoop at? Is it goin to be functional?

I just thought I'd pitch in to say that my hood will be going up for sale soon. I wont have my Bonne much longer because of financial issues so I will be selling everything I can to get some money back.

we also did the same T/A scoop on my buddies Grand Am

After much delay I've finally had a enough of a break to find some options for my scoop, I've narrowed it down to these 2 options based on my taste and some ideas I saw on others cars (using a trans am scoop).

#1 - Ram Air Trans Am scoop - your basic hood scoop, similar to what other members here have already done. On the upside, I already know that this would look good on the bonnie.

#2 - L88 style scoop - Ok, you have to use you imagination a bit for this one. The way I picture it, this scoop would be glassed into the hood and flow evenly into the front along the line that already goes up from the nose. It would definitely require more work and some minor modification. I plan on doing this in photoshop and posting it up as soon a time allows.

The TA hood looks better in my opinion. Those are just importZX hoods under a new name. The quality is ok, but watch customer support if you have a problem, there is none. Putting it on the hood will be a bit of work. Take your time and it will look good.

a quick and crap job with photoshop 6 (old school), but you get the gist of the L88 idea

Image

I think I'm going to cut a cardboard mockup out and see exactly how the L88 would look. At the moment I'm leaning toward the TA hood but I'm not decided. Still open to any other ideas assuming someone happens to know of any other decent scoops for sale online.

I did see the stock (?) trans am ram air hood for the 93-96 firebirds, which I thought was nice looking. I'm not against gratuitous work for a cool end result and I think the scoop could be cut from the hood and glassed onto mine.

I'm definitely not willing to pay $500 for this though, tried searching some junkyards online for a damaged TA hood but no luck.
