Code 41 (UPDATED)

Post by mstrwolfgang »

So, I have replaced the camshaft position sensor, both the sensor and the interrupter. My ignition coils and ICM are both reading good. I am still getting a code 41. Any common issues that I might want to try next? Thanks...

I'd look for shorts in the wiring.

Check the wiring under the alternator that goes to the ICM. Mine was rubbing on the belt and wore through the wires. The cam sensor signal goes to the ICM (and is not used there) and sent directly out to the ECM.

I don't have an FSM for the 92, but maybe someone can jump in here that does to let you know what pins and wire colors to look at. On my 89 it goes into the ICM on pin j a brown/white wire and exits on pin f a black wire. Pin f (black wire) then goes to the ECM to BC5.

Also make sure you have ground on pin b of the SENSOR CONNECTOR (middle pin) and 10+ volts on pin C. This is a white/black wire to pin n on the ICM

Again, this is from my 89 FSM, the sensor is the same one, but they might have changed the wire colors. Do some resistance checks through the wiring and see what you come up with.

On that connector, with the locking clip away from you the pins are :

c = left = 10+ volts
b = middle = ground
a = right = signal out

Hope this helps.

I just looked at my 95 FSM and the wiring is the same, so we can assume the 92 will be the same until someone else confirms it.

Yeah, I'm gonna check the wiring. I happen to have the FSM for the 92, so I will study up tonight and I'll have to wait until tomorrow to do it. Nice and rainy here tonight. lol

Thanks again. I hope its something so simple. :ack:

I think my 93 is the same.
Sensor signal feeds into ICM on WHT/BLK wire. Is probably next to last wire on one end.
ICM feeds signal out to PCM on Black wire.
On the way to the PCM, it also goes through the 8-way connector, which should be near the passenger, rear side of the intake manifold, on top of the engine.
If disconnecting/reconnecting (or wiggly jiggling) a harness connector miraculously fixes the problem (probably temporary), suspect a loose female pin on that harness connector. My 93 is notorious for this. :angry4:
You also have the plug on the PCM to consider. That is where I chased my latest problem down to.

Re: Code 41 (UPDATE)

Post by mstrwolfgang »

Just thought I would update... I am HOPEFULLY going to get to check the wires tonight, but I still don't know if it will get done. I have been unbelievably busy lately.

However, I wanted to share some further issues and see if we're still heading down the same path...

The car will sometimes die without warning while driving. It has done this to me on I-35 already at one point. Right before it does this (about 90% of the time) the tachometer will start to jump slightly, even if there's no change in the RPMs (that I can notice). Also, sometimes it will idle real doggishly, like it's barely trying to stay alive. Lastly, when it does die, it usually starts right back up, but there have now been 2-3 times where it will turn over, but won't start until the 3rd or 4th attempt. I'm getting frustrated, as this is still my only form of transport.

The dying sounds like a crankshaft position sensor.
