Tach dropping out

Post by woody_02silverse »

The Tach on my '02 is dropping down to zero and staying there occasionally, until I restart it. At the same time it sputters and loses power. I am assuming this is a bad crankshaft position sensor. There is no engine light/code. Does that sound like the problem?

Assuming the CPS does need replace, I've also read about the harmonic balancer rubber inserts wearing out. Would it also be a good idea to replace the harmonic balancer or are they relatively expensive? It has about 95k miles on it.

Thanks a lot.

Only when the tach drops out, about the same time it missfires and gets sluggish (although I am not sure which happens first). When you shut it off and restart it runs perfectly. This just happened yesterday and today, after about 15 minutes of driving each time.

i dont think it is the crank sensor,i replaced my ignition control module and has not stalled or missfire since, no more sluggish either.my mechanic told me the module's in gm are known to go bad,the crank sensor runs through the module,i was getting that code and a o2 sensor code since i fixed the module all is good and car runs excellent.

Mine isn't setting any codes though (nor the check engine light), which is odd. Is that an expensive module?
