Neutral Safety Switch: How I Fixed It ('94 SLE)

Post by Tony94 »

1994 Bonnie SLE

I got lucky and my Bonnie failed after I came home. Next morning: I turn the key, and no engine cranking occurs. I thought, "*dang*, I left the dome light on!" (I did, but that wasn't the problem). I hook up charger and wait... wait.. wait... turn key, nothing! I do basic troubleshooting with multimeter and find the culprit: the neutral safety switch (mounted on transmission bell housing). While removing the switch I note the actual problem which turns out to be mechanical and not electrical: the plastic bushing in the switch that slides over the transmission position rod is wallowed out: Instead of having 2 opposing flat sides in counterpart to the transmission position rod, it looks almost circular so that the rod slips in the bushing rather than turning the mechanism of the switch without "slop". (Another problem I find is that the switch attaching bolts are loose). I investigate online and find that a new switch is around $200. Ouch!

The solution (after some contemplation): I cut off the spade of an electrical spade terminal which then gave me a small (approximately 1/4" x 3/8") piece of aluminum without much effort. After a few tries, I was able to tap the piece between the flat spot of the transmission position rod and the remnants of flatness of the wallowed out switch bushing. It was good that it took a few tries because the final result was that the fit was tight. I adjust the switch according to the specs and now have a fix I feel confident about, and saved up to $200 for a new part.

I worked for me! :)

if you go to your local auto parts store, a new switch is only about 80 dollars... just incase you need to buy one
