Brand New Goodyear Tires at 25% Off

Post by Tony94 »

I have done this in the past: Bought Goodyear tires from Sears soon after the first of the year when they have their "buy 3, get 1 free" sale (I've noticed the ads many times and I think it happens every year). I noticed it last week or the week before and it may still be active (before "race day"? (Indy)). Are you feeling like you paid waay too much for those tripletreds from a retailer now?

I hate BadYears. My SS had Eagle RS-As and even with lots of tread, they couldn't hook at all in the dry, and in wet weather I had to be extremely careful.

BFG KDWS FTW.

BTW...I'd say a good 75% of this forum is against Goodyear. Overpriced and underperforming.

GoodYear makes some of the worst tires on the market. Not all of them, but some are. And they can be found cheaper than the 3/1 Sears sale. Sears is the most expensive place to buy tires, and I don't trust the very young kids they hire for the shop.

Dad has GY Tripletreds on the 2004 PAU. They have restored my faith in GY, but then again, these are $600+ a set new, even at the cheaper places like Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct.

I got my Triple Treds for $165 apiece, counting shipping from Tire Rack, as well as mounting and balancing from a local shop. I absolutely love them. They work great in all conditions, and handle and wear well. I only have about 5k on them, but they show little wear, and I've left some nice patches of rubber on some local roads.

I was quoted $528 for 16" Triple Treds, mounted, balanced, alignment, stems from my local shop. I'm not entirely sure what the total cost at Sears would be with the "get one free deal". There's also the warranty issue: I think Sears has some kind of replacement insurance plan, and I'm thinking that is included. (?)

Most reputable shops offer road hazard insurance for free on name-brand tires.

GoodYear has made a horrible name for themselves with crappy overpriced tires like the all season (HAH) Eagle RS-A, Eagle LS and OE Wrangler AT, truck tires, however, they obviously have the potential to serve up quite an awesome tire, proven in their Assurance and summer Eagle line, and with truck tires like the Wrangler SilentArmor and Fortera Tripletred. You have to pay close attention to their lines, names and prices mean absolutely nothing....more so than many tire companies.

I have a reminded confidence in Bridgestone. Tires like their Potenza RE960AS PP all season for cars, and the Dueler A/T Revo (unlike the remainder of the Dueler line) for trucks are absolutely excellent. No kidding neither is cheap, but if I remember correctly, a horrible RS/A will break your bank account.

My Point, if I rattled on for too long...

Don't judge a tire company by its OE tires. Most have some shining stars.

225/60R16 GoodYear Assurance Tripletreds $515 mounted/balanced on the 93 SE

265/70R17 Bridgestone Dueler AT Revos $870 mounted/balanced on the truck.

But they're both worth it.

The thing about the b3g1 deal from sears is.... corporate marks the tires up quite a bit right before the sale starts, so a tire that normally is like 160 is *dang* near 200 when the sale starts so they dont loose money.

HOWEVER sears does have some tires that i will bet that you cant find cheaper elsewhere... ie the kumho 716 solus, its a great price tire for sears, and is usually priced about 20/tire cheaper than discount tire.

The Goodyear Viva 2's at Wal-Mart are terrible. My mom has a set on her Subaru because they were cheap after she only replaced the front two and 4000 miles later the center differential crapped the bed. Those tires have poor snow traction (doing 4-wheel drifts through unplowed parking lots over Christmas), unbalance very quickly (violent shaking at highway speeds), and are quite squirmy when going around corners.

A friend got Triple Treds on his Cobalt. They were much better than the OEM Continentals. I'd expect them to be for what he paid.
