Belts

Post by Duiknou »

Hello all. New member here, although I am an owner of a 2000 Grand Am GT. Love my Pontiac!! Anyways, my son has a 1997 Supercharged and we need to replace the water pump. Fine, got the Haynes book. The one thing we haven't been able to find is belts. Everything says it's one belt (serpentine) but we traced and there's 2. Seems like the regular serpentine and then one that runs the super/turbo charger. Are we totally not seeing where it is one belt or am I just not finding what I want on the net? No diagrams, no parts, etc. Is the other belt called something else? Kind of a little lost on this part. Seems like the water pump is going to be the easier than the belts! Thanks for any info!

Wow!! Thank you sooooo much! I did search and search for a diagram for the 2nd belt (acc?) and kept coming up empty. I apologize if I posted this wrong, but I saw it said this was the place for only supercharged so....yeah. Thanks again!

You were close......Forced Induction is for actual supercharger problems, not general problems with supercharged engines. I moved it to 92-99 for you.

Really agree with withcolt about buying a factory service manual. I do not recommend Ebay (currently trying to get money back from their PayPal from a ripoff artist) but this is the picture of what the real manuals look like

You can buy an original from helminc.com including shipping for $120-135...

Yeah, we're finding that out. We've ran into a glitch. The pully for the power steering pump isn't allowing us to remove one of the bolts. And the Haynes...now we know.....doesn't show the engine he has exactly. There's no way to get to the top bolts for the PS pump so we're kinda stuck at the moment. I'm gonna go hunt and see what I can find.

Both PS pump bolts are accessible through the holes in the pulley.

Ggrrr.....we're stuck again. Can't get the last bolt out because the idler pulley is blocking it. Any help? I swear I'm ordering the factory service manual but I need help now. Half the car is apart and we only have this week to fix it. Although...he has a short temper and will get fed up before then, but I'll put it back together then smack him silly.

Does the pulley come off easily? The bolt likely is a reverse thread but those pulley wheels come off for replacement. Would that give you access.

Ok. This is the problem. The last bolt on the water pump is blocked by the idler pulley. The idler pulley is blocked by a motor mount. They are trying to get the mount off so they can get the pulley out of the way and then they'll be able to get to the last water pump bolt. I'm sure the pulley would come off easy, but I'd forgot about the motor mount. They've taken out 3 bolts but it's not budging. Are there more bolts on the underside?

(If I was there I wouldn't be learning all of this thru texting...ggrrr)

I just had the 3" grooved idler pulley collapse and so need to replace it. I just joined the site and found your photo of the belt routing to be very helpful.

I noticed my my full throttle power was gone and then noticed the boost gauge was not going above 0, so I poppped the hood open and found the belt in good shape, but the idler pulley was shot.

Next stop, is to stop over to the performance section to see what I can do.

2nd mod will be a high flow air intake.
