chat client
So currently we are using flashchat as our integrated chat client. As you may notice, it is directly tied into our forum's user db. I have heard in the past multiple people requesting a more true IRC type chat client, such as mirc, for the club. So my question to the members who use chat here, what client/program would you prefer? What do you want to see different than we do in chat today? Please provide links and additional info when possible.

I have actually never had one single problem that I would blame on the current system that we have right now.

I'm pretty happy with the chat client, sure, flash isn't the highest speed thing out there...but it works.

Re: chat client
Have you given thought to using IRC? I use ircqnet a lot and it is easy to set up a room.

I hope my info was of some use and if not sorry to distract you with something you don't need. for what its worth I have never had any issue with our current chat client... aside from nobody ever being on when I am.

Re: chat client
Not at all. I've used MIRC before in the past and it's a good solid program. Not sure if it can be integrated with the phpbb though. If there are no major concerns over our existing chat setup, I may just stick with it.

Re: chat client
If you wanted to use irc, there are web applet IRC clients, such as cgiirc. Setting up a channel is trivial, as all you'd either have to do is put an eggdrop in an efnet channel (for the sake of argument #Pontiac Bonneville Club) -- or other irc networks allow you to register the channel to a user through identserv, and it eases up the control issues. An example of this would be ecnet.
Just imagine a web applet that is in place of the flash client.
No real method that I know of to integrate an IRC frontend with phbbb -- reason being is the network is its own server, so registration / usernames are controled there. The only way to circumvent this is to run your own network, which just adds complexity.
Hopefully some of this helps (:

Re: chat client
If there is not raging desire to replace the current chat with something else, I'm tempted to stick with it. That was we can use our existing use base for logins to chat and help eliminate chat spammers and such.

Re: chat client
I normally don't get logged out due to chat being the problem, but other people have issues. My issues are usually from between the back of the chair and the keyboard.

Since there are no real remarks stating against it, I'm gonna stick with the flashchat we have now. :D

Re: chat client
I'm thinking the last server move (over a year ago) probably fixed a lot of the dropped sessions and things people were initially complaining about.

Re: chat client
anything that requires an installation/setup and isn't very user friendly wont be used as much as the flash setup we have.
