Swapping today, my friend is loaning a ZZP 3.4 for testing purposes, and it looks to go on to the shaft too far, to a point where the belt won't line up with the other stuff, too far inboard.

Am I correct in thinking the pulley needs to be all the way on? Is the shaft tapered?

Would the pulley I'm using from a 99 GP GTP be different? Same snout I would think as well.

Any help would be great, we're working it right now.

Thanks

Press on pulley or MPS hub?

My understanding is that you basically press it on until it lines up correctly.

I think the method above still applies. Basically eyeball it to where the grooves line up with the other pulleys.

Mine stopped at a certain spot, wouldn't go any further, and once the pulley was put on it lined up with the other pulleys. Rebuilt snout?

Not as far as I know, but after starting, it appears SC oil is leaking somewhere, pooled a bit on the lim under the snout, and the underside of the snout :sadeyz:

Could I have screwed up something taking the pulley in too far?

The shaft is tapered, the edge of the pulley should be even with the end of the shaft...

How did you install the pulley?

I know what you're thinking, but we had a sweet puller, I don't know who Lyndon bought it from, but it's definitely the right one. He lent it to me, as it appears I may be pulling it off again quite soon. I'll post a pic of the puller tomorrow, it's in my trunk after the long ride home with no SC.

When Lyndon installed his, not today, he said he continued wrenching until it felt seated, but when we did mine, the pulley went on further, binding on the housing and mis-aligned for the belt path. With the pulley eyeballed in-line now, only the chamfered end of the shaft is exposed outside the pulley.

Kinda bummed with the leak, but at least it was caught right away.

Im sure Bills tutorial will probably be the best?

And his parts link. Still happening?

I used a washer, nut, and bolt to install mine. The nut pushes on the washer pushes on the hub. The washer bottoms out on the snout end, and the hub is in the right spot. So I'm surprised you were able to push it on any further than that, which is why I asked how you did it.

Every pulley I have put on goes on the same. Shaft is not tapered. Pulley is hard to put on...then it gets to a point that feels impossible to push further. This is the point it is far enough. Sort of like having your 1/2" wratchet on a 10mm bolt in aluminum. If you keep cranking, it will go, but when you think it is enough, it probably is.

Someone prior to you may have gone beyond that spot...or if you have a leak, the snout may have been apart and somebody stuck it in a lathe and sanded down the end of it to clean it up, and now it does not seal, or stop the pulley properly anymore.

Pretty sure the SC hasn't been messed with before I bought the car, those guys were retired, The leak began immediately after the pulley install, and I'm positive it was bone dry since the LIM job last November, so I'm feeling a little boneheaded for screwing it up. The nosedrive was probably due for an overhaul anyway, so it's not all bad, I guess.

Hold your fire!

We spun the puller around and it's all lined up now. This picture of the snout shows a couple gouges from the puller not the pulley, with the pulley back in the right spot. We did a quick scan and noticed SC oil upon returning.

Still in "roadside quick-fix state", since there was no way I was getting underneath to pull the spacer and belt in the storm on the way home. The alignment looks off, but it's just my photo skills, it's all good now. Crappy pic, sorry.

Parts are scheduled to arrive Thursday, bearings, coupler, seal and oil. The job looks fairly straightforward, and I have access to a nice press to do it.

Yup. I registered on a bunch of different 3800 sites in my Quest For Tune, and I connected with him through WCGPC, (as you prob know) but unfortunately renewal is looking less and less likely, as there are very few users there.

Super nice guy, he's probably scanning JMH1950's SSEi on his DHP as we speak. I'm trying to get him over here on BC, but there is a rumor the GP may be descending to a different branch on the ol' tree, if you know what I mean :-$ and the Chevy pick-up is getting his attention these days.
