I was going to the store earlier and my interior lights were on. I checked the switch and its off and i opened and closed the door a few times and they stayed on, even while driving. The only time they go off is if i push the lock button on the remote 8 to 15 times or if i press lock on the door and they shut off after the 5 second delay when the doors lock.

Anybody have any idea whats causing it?

According to the FSM, it sounds like the MALL (body control module). The MALL controls dimming and operation of the interior lights.

The FSM also indicates it could be a door switch, the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) which is the module that works with your remote, or a headlamp switch.

One of the first tests to try is to see if opening closing the other doors (other than the drivers door) provides a different result.

i tried all the doors, and they stillll stay on, they did go off when i put it in gear today and then a few minutes later they came back on. I just took out the fuse for the lights for now so that it doesn't drain the battery.

The next steps are to disconnect the RFA and see if the lights stay on. If so, the next step is to remove the MALL and see if the lights stay on. If teh lightsd go off when one of the modules is disconnected, then the FSM says to replace the faulty module. Both modules are located on a bracket, underneath the passenger side of the dash board. Remove the hush panel under the passenger side of the dash and look underneath. You should see the MALL as it is most visible, and the RFA is behind it on that same bracket. IIRC, there is a tab at the back of the MALL. Release the tab and slide the MALL down off the bracket.

Ok, when i unplug the MALL a few seconds later the lights will dim off as they would if i would normally close the doors. When i replace it, will one from a junkyard be good?

Definitely sounds like a bad MALL. A junkyard one may last forever or may not last a week. You never know. A lot depends on your financial position and how long you plan to keep the car. If it were me, I would get a new one. The MALL has inputs to a LOT of things and although a JY one may solve your lighting issue, you could end up with a different problem.

From ROCKAUTO.com: ACDELCO Part # 10427827 {replaces 10419780}
Category: Body Control Module = $60.79

From GMPartsDiect.com: GM PART # 10427827
CATEGORY: Body Multifunction Computer Connector/Module
PACK QTY: 1
CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $95.99
OUR PRICE: $49.92

Also, if you get a JY one, try not to get one from a '96 or early '97. IIRC, there was a recall from GM on them for '96.

Models:
Buick Park Avenue Year: 1996
Buick Riviera Year: 1996
Oldsmobile 88 Year: 1996
Oldsmobile 98 Year: 1996
Oldsmobile Aurora Year: 1996
Pontiac Bonneville Year: 1996
Manufacture Dates: March 1995-August 1995
Number of Vehicles: 32,869
Recall Number: 95V204000
System: Ignition and anti-theft. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 114
and No. 208.
Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles.
Description of Noncompliance: These vehicles were assembled with a malfunction
alarm, lighting and locking (mall) module that may contain a damaged capacitor.
If the capacitor is damaged, the "Key in the Ignition" warning chime and the
driver seat belt unbuckled warning chime and indicator lamp may not work.
This does not meet the requirements of FMVSS No.114, "Theft Protection," and
FMVSS No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." In addition, other chime reminder
functions, interior lighting controls and power door locking features are also
affected.

Thanks for looking up all that info. I'm pretty broke right now so I'm gonna have to get a JY one but there are about 5 places in my area i can go to, so hopefully i should be able to find one that isn't part of that recall.

I have a similar problem, if I may. I have a standard 99, and the internal lights stay on no matter what I do unless I leave a door open for about 6 minutes. Any thoughts about how to deal with this problem?

Thanks!!!

You just dug up a 3 year old topic that may be a different root cause than yours. It would be best if you started your own topic. so we don't cloud the issue, and don't cause other members who are trying to help to have to dig through old posts of unrelated information before they get to your new post.
