Is it true that I can only use trans from same year bonneville or lesabre? What about other years with same code?

LOTS of Mods

There were some differences in Valve Body's but I was under the understanding that was for the 00 MY only.

Worst case scenario is that if you found a trans with the correct gear ratio, you could swap valve body's so everything is happy

they are both interchangeable. check the gear ratios... if the are different then swap your diff over and it should work fine. if the gear ratios are not correct the ecu will be confused and *shoot* points and your MPH reading will be off on the dash.
