Took my GXP in to have the intermediate shaft replaced. When I went to pick up the car, there was no charge! I was told that GM is covering them till 7/70. Hooray for me (us).

they should replace them for the life of the vehicle...Every 2000+ bonenville will likely be affected at some point.

Is GM replacing them on all 2000+'s? Or just GXP's or what? and there is no 7/70, did you mean 7/07/08?

I need to take mine in again for the 3rd time. :angry4: I had the revised one installed over a year ago. Now I'm getting the clunk-clunk again making turns.

I've had the intermediate shaft on my 02 Bonneville SSEI replaced every 15K miles or so since it was new. There is a service bulletin to grease it, but that doesn't work. When you start hearing a clunk in the steering when driving over a bump and turning a corner, it's time for a new one. Got to know the symptoms so well, I just drive in to the service bay and tell them it needs an intermediate shaft. They don't even question me. This is a known problem and there is a policy adjustment on it. I didn't know it had a limit (7years - 70K). My car has 7 years - 75K miles now - probably need another one in 5 or 10K miles - yikes.

guys, i just pull down the boot in the footwell and spray some chain lube i have lying around in there... it fixes the clunk for a few months, and when it comes back i do it again. why would you have it replaced every 15k?

That would be too easy :laughing3: GM did make a new shaft, but it seems to dry out as well. I think a majority of those that go in without knowledge of the newer design or dont say/insist about it just get a relube. My experience is that in general, GM Dealer service is one of the most unethical places to get s straight story of what needs to be, and what is actually done when it comes to covered repairs.

My GXP started to make a slight noise when cornering at low speeds (34K miles) and I was getting ready to take it in. I took the front airstruts off and put the OEM suspension back on. I alot of removing and compressing things and now,..... no noise. I wonder if the retrofit moved the IM shaft enough to regrease the top? If and when the noise comes back, I am going to take your suggestion. I really don't Gomer and crew tearing things apart under my dash.

The GM trucks do have the same intermediate shaft issue. My Tahoe was replaced at 40K and the service manager told me that all the Suburbans and Escalades have the same steering shaft clunk issue as the Bonne. It's unusual for a GM service manager to admit there is a big multi-model, under-engineered, parts problem. IMHO

The place I buy tires told me the same about the GM trucks/SUVs, skregal. There are some good Service Centers/managers. I guess my previous post was fueled by bad experiences at several. The one I take mine to now seems to want to get at and fix problems not just symptoms. And doesn't seem bothered by GM's tightening of warranty claims.

I got mine replaced at around 12000 miles, this was like august this year.
The clunking noise really was bad and annoying.
The car is still under the 3/36 warranty and I did purchase a follow up warranty when I bought to car.
