I was in the chat room the other nite and someone said how bad the smoke was coming out of their exhaust manifolds when the used Seafoam to clean their intake and their combustion chamber. I thought what a great way to check my car for cracks.

Now I know removing the manifolds and checking them is going to a better way to check for sure, but that option wasn't available just yet to me.(Still working on that one)
So I video the process and found 1 leak. It is the metal flex pipe under the EGR valve. I think it is called an EGR stove pipe. I will be replacing that ASAP.

You can see in the video that there was no other smoke coming out except that spot. The car also did not pour a lot of smoke out the tailpipes either. It obviously blew white smoke but nothing crazy at all. The guys in the club have done it to their cars and were amazed at how much little smoke there was. They thought it was going to be a smoke bomb also.

Hopefully this means I am in good shape manifold wise.

I think we chatted the other day. As I said, we have the exact same cars and my rear manifolds smoked up and a little on the fronts. Yours did quite well, very little smoke. I'm impressed! She sounds pretty good too. It's not to say that they don't have cracks, or rather, not yet at least. Seems they are prone to cracking. I didn't have much come out the tailpipes either. BTW, how much was the cat replacement?

The cat went $250 installed. I am still on the fence about going to a louder muffler to hear it rumble. LOL

I had absolutely no smoke thru a whole can come out the pipes. I was watching intensely and the car was plenty hot! All my smoke came from the pipe under the EGR Valve.

The Cat is a Magnaflow Hi-Spun Metallic Converter. It has the highest street legal flow and is about the size of a beer can!

One leak may prevent the smaller leaks from being visible. I have yet to see a set of S1 manifolds that don't have micro-cracks.

The smaller pulley will run your exhaust hotter and turn the micro's into mini's and major's. Smoke or not, I'd bet you still have stress cracks.

I am working on getting a guy to pull these and check them for me.
I have 2 more sources local to me to check with.
I think people are afraid they will break bolts in the head or something!
Everyone shy's away from the manifolds.

I believe you that they are probably cracked as they are 14 years old.
You are soooo lucky I don't live closer!~LOL

Otherwise I think the car ran ok. :)

If you lived closer, we'd be done already.

I've never seen a stud break off in 6 years with this club. Consider getting a wrecker set yourself, have them repaired, and swap them on. It's not a bad job, but it does require a swivel-head torque wrench.
