After installing my SD headers me and my dad (S10 w/ V6) did a little run and he pretty much got me. I figured I would have pulled away from him so I decided to scan and see what my KR was under WOT. Anything above 4000 RPM's the KR climbs to 10+ and its almost like the engine is choking. It does have the stock converter on it at 170K but I hear a sound under WOT that is hard to describe, kind of like a pinging sound. Possibly valve spring or something? I can post a scan log if that would help, just looking for some insight before I throw stuff at it. I do occasionally get a misfire code if I keep on it til redline, no cylinders are registered though.

Mods: CAI, SD headers, Fresh 104's and wires, swapped coil packs with a different set, 180 thermostat, stock tune other than transmission.

What you are hearing either is knock, or could be causing false knock.

What year is his S10?

Also, I wanted to confirm you are running 91 octane correct?

I would suspect the catalytic converter at this point, but you can confirm it by disconnecting the downpipe from the rest of the exhaust and going for a rip. You can also give the converter a knock with a rubber mallet when cold to see if it rattles.

You should probably play nice until you can get to the bottom of this. Knock (if that's what it is) is very bad for the engine.

+1 on cracking open the exhaust ahead of the cat as a test. If you get a chance, post a scan log. There may be more to the story. Last I knew the fastest S10's were in the really high 15's, stock SSEi should be a full second faster.

Have you checked your fuel filter/fuel pressure? If you're running out of fuel, it'd cause issues...

My dad has a 2001 S10 with minimal mods. I always run 93 gas and changed the fuel filter about 12k miles ago (I know I need to get a pressure reading). Pm me a email and I can send the scan log unless there is a way to on here.
